marcus houston

the year was 2000, i think. some of the details are hazy to me now. hankkingsley and i were in our first la apartment up on argyle, north of franklin. following recruiting like good little horn fans, the marcus houston saga wore on for weeks. not only was this kid a stud running back, but he was a stud citizen.

if memory serves, volunteered places, mentored younger kids, just an all around badass.

we knew we had a shot, but didn't have a bunch of history waiting on these oos bluechippers. he was to announce on a local colorado radio station.

the night before, we were all in chat, and someone had gained some intel that during the horn coaches in home visit, marcus had basically told him it was texas over the buffs. we were giddy.

everyone thought it was in the bag.

the next day (which wasn't signing day, maybe a few weeks off), we all listened online to this radio station. they interviewed him. they teased the announcement. it was just a matter of time.

then, he said it. he chose the buffs over the horns. we couldn't believe our ears. we were just quiet. we thought it was a mistake. i think we just turned the computer off and sat down to watch tv or something. neither of us said much.

obviously houston didn't have much of a career, for the can't miss prospect he was. but damn, if this **** happens again tomorrow, i will find hankkingsley and punch him in the arm.

He made a huge mistake. I think he would have been a great back at Texas. He played for two of the biggest slimeball coaches in college footballl - Bienemy and Barnett. The culture at Texas would have been a much better fit for him. He really never got a fair shake with Bienemy.

I remember that well. it was getting to where i worried he'd end up saving the world before he got the chance to star for the horns. then he went to colorado. never heard of him since.

His transfer to CSU was strange in that the NCAA waived the requirement to sit out a year, citing extenuating circumstances. I've always wondered what the heck happened to allow that.

Houston was the first thing I thought about a few weeks ago when it looked we were actually making a push.

At the time, I figured it would play out about the same way. Still feel that way today.

As I recall, we managed to survive not signing Marcus Houston. I'm sure the same will hold true if/when Scott decides to go the same route.

Marcus Houston and that damned radio broadcast is the reason I no longer follow recruiting... dang it. Back to Cactus Cafe...

All I know is that CU fans despise the guy. My girlfriend talks bad about him and she doesn't even care that much about football.

CU probably promised in recruiting to mold their entire offense around him. No wonder he ended up with a "me first, I'm special attitude".

Did he have any uncles?

You know South Austin, seems like your right.

i'm surprised to hear some of y'all calling him out as "me first". everyhting i've ever read about him is that he's the exact opposite.

the guy was already high profile because of his athletic prowess. of course he's going to get exposure for his efforts to keep kids off drugs, etc. he could have just sat on his *** and still been in the papers, so i don't think it could have been all about that.

My lasting memory of Marcus Houston is the horn-impersonating aggy who came over here and basically ran the guy into the ground on this board after he picked CU over us.

Watching him get exposed on this board was one of the funnier things I remember reading on hornfans up to that point. Go to the classics if you want to see how it went down, its still there.

I'd rather have a kid get the media involved in his "keep kids off drugs programs" than a kid who puts up gansta drug pages on his MySpace.com account.
