“Solar stocks tumbled Friday after Sen. Joe Manchin said he will not support increased spending to address climate change, according to NBC News, citing a Democrat briefed on the conversations.”

I hope he didn’t tell Fancy Nancy Pelosi beforehand as I’d bet she’s been heavy into any green energy stocks while supporting this bill.

Ironic to do it as we are about to go on a legendary heat streak - like Vinny Chase at a craps table. :)

I was at meeting in a couple of months ago from a non partisan economist and he said it best that I will try to..
The US produces the cleanest fossil fuel energy on the planet, yet the current administrations policy is to import from countries that produce the worst pollution.
He went on to say that the best way to reduce greenhouse emissions is to produce as much as we can right here in the US.
He used the word “absurd green energy policy”, I borrowed that from him.
And to keep this legit- he hammered Trump on some things… and often traveled with him on AF1.

Just imagine the inflation if Manchin had not killed the $5 trillion bill proposed by the Dems. A statue of Manchin needs to be put in front of the Capitol.

Interesting discussion. I have felt for the last several years that he ought to just switch parties, but the point here that his voting against his party many times is more effective in most cases, it seems, then if he was a Republican.

Of course, I think having him as an (R) would be better overall, but there is a good argument to his remaining with the Dimwits.

He probably will eventually switch. Frankly, it would make the most sense for him to do it after the election. However, he's not an obvious fit in either party. He's similar to other West Virginia Democrats of the past like Robert Byrd and Jay Rockefeller. He's socially right-leaning, but on fiscal and economic issues he isn't that conservative. He just isn't a full-blown lunatic like the rest of his party is, so he looks conservative.

Yes, it has been pointed out also that most Democrats through history up through the early 2000s would be Republicans by today's "standards".

I was raised by a stanch Democrat from the FDR era. If she were alive today, she would be appalled at what the Democratic Party has become - Defund the Police, Antifa, BLM, (I was raised that ALL lives matter, but you can't say that). She believed in America First, Service to Country and fellow citizens, Stand on your own as best you can.

Those any many other qualities have diminished over time. Why? Where are we headed?

There is a large portion of liberals that still believes in communism despite its murderous failure over the last 100 years. Truly difficult to fathom the depth of that malevolence and idiocy. Many reside comfortably in academia, and some in Congress.

I’m hoping I get to go hunting with Soros and his offspring one day.

Planning to pull a Dick Cheney, are you?

Because there has been a massive political realignment. The Democratic Party your mom joined was interested in serving working class interests (or their perceived interests) and consisted of working class voters. It was concerned with empowering unions, economic protectionism, and building an entitlement system that benefited the working class (Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, and the crown jewel that they never got, a national healthcare system).

The current party largely serves the secular professional class, so those priorities have shifted a lot. They still give lip service to some of the old agenda items, but look where they actually put their efforts in recent years. They've pushed student loan forgiveness (good for the professional class, does little for working class), COVID lockdowns (mostly good for professional class and catastrophic for working class), non-means tested free money for COVID relief (superficially helps both but more could have been given to the working class who suffered much more if we didn't throw cash at the professional class that mostly didn't need it), expanded immigration (good for professional class, bad for working class), and green energy (good for professional class, bad for working class). The rest of their agenda has been pushing social and cultural hobby horses that make the secular professional class feel good about itself and enable it to signal its moral and intellectual superiority over the working class (radicalism on abortion, gender ideology and drag queens, racial essentialism, environmentalism, etc.).

Are they pushing for a national healthcare system? Not really. The professional class doesn't care about that. What about protectionism to try to keep manufacturing jobs in the US? Hell no. It's all about licking China's nuts, which is good for the professional class. What about unions? Are Democrats trying to repeal the Taft-Hartley Act (which reined in unions and permitted right-to-work states) and put private sector unions back on the map? No. They protect government sector unions (which are more professional class than private because they include teachers), but they put damn near no effort into private sector unions anymore.

So your mom's party simply doesn't exist anymore, and the GOP in probably caters to its old constituencies more than the current Democrats do. At least they don't actively insult their values.

That makes sense.

Heat is not where solar power is derived from. Clear sun IS a requirement.

But the OTHER major problem with solar is that, much like the EV nonsense being shoved down the American throat, it forces a reliance upon China. The resources needed to produce the panels and even the storage is not something we have in this country. Some are available in the nation where we just abandoned a phucton of equipment AND Americans just under a year ago though...

Manchin correctly voted against something that costs too much and does too little...

227,

When she loses her reelection bid, she won't have any value even to the Chinese or Putin. When you get your next "inheritance" from Nigeria, you might get them to take her for 20% of your newfound wealth.

You are correct. We recently purchased solar-powered fountains for our bird bath and cat drinking water. They work great but require SUNLIGHT, not heat. The birdbath has cells for that last 6 -7 hours. Do you want your town depending on that supply?
