I hope that this whole Baylor ordeal will at least force other schools to take a long, hard look at their own policies and athletic culture, and protect other young women from such crimes. Maybe that way something good can come from it.

Don't be so sure that anything will "come out". Baylor has been sweeping major issues under the rug for well over 25 years, and some of the worst have yet to see the light of day. Many more items under that rug, and it will become part of the Davis Mountains.

The biggest common problem I see in rape and other sexual misconduct accusations at colleges across the country is the school tries to handle it themselves instead of turning it over to law enforcement. They have even been told to do this by the Dept of Education in order to circumvent due process rules. I am surprised Baylor has not played this card yet.

That's pretty bad. The only way they can prove they care is to treat it like any other accusation or crime. If they know about it it is their duty to report the crime is it not?

Just like it should have happened at Penn State.

Something is misunderstood. This goes against basic human rights which the Department of Justice chases with great zeal.

Agreed, ViperHorn.....between the Dept. of Justice and the Dept. of Education, they'd be doing just the opposite of "circumventing due process."

The letter is part of the problem as it does not clearly distinguish between civil and criminal issues. Title IX federalizes the issue and explains how a school has to respond when an incident is reported to them. Nothing in the letter takes away an individual's right to report a physical assault to local law enforcement. In fact, any physical assault (a criminal issue) should be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency ASAP in order to preserve evidence. The legal section of law enforcement will take care of the Title IX implications in those circumstances.
