Malcolm firm in commitment

"Benson didn't play against OU as a FR because Mack thought he couldn't block"

Nine years ago. There's no way Brown won't see the field next year with the current crop of OL and RB talent around him. Hell, it won't be much of a transition for him, considering he lost all of his best supporting cast members at Cibolo after his Jr. year. If you're implying that Mack and Major won't play him because he won't be able to pick up a blitz, you're dead wrong.

And it wouldn't be the personnel that would keep him from getting good numbers, it would be the scheme.

Those dumb coaches. Gosh, why do we have them?

Seriously, my OP was just to keep everyone up to date on our commitment from the nations #1 back. Guess it got railroaded (am I surprised?).

It's great that MB wants to be a Longhorn. I'm only pointing out that Mack has never had a running back come in and be a difference maker from day one. Benson didn't. Charles didn't. Whaley and Shead haven't even played. I'd love to see MB start the first game next year because I believe he is a special player. Unfortunately, I believed the same about all the other running backs I listed. Maybe we over-hype these kids and expect too much too soon.

Johnny,
Charles had a pretty big freshman year and gouged ou. Shead needs to mature physically some. I got that from an person very inside. The coaches really like him and what they see, but he needs muscle and to get used to the college game. That was kind of expected by most "gurus" though. Whaley ate himself out of RB.

I have seen Brown a few times up close and I think he will see the field pretty early.
It has been a disappointment with RB's lately, no doubt. I am hearing we have a great shot at Gray next year and if not him Trey Williams from Spring Dekaney or another.

Charles did come in and make a difference from Game 1. Look at his ULL stats from 2005. Sure he had a sophomore slump, but that was more because of the scheme we had to adopt with Colt at the helm.

And you really thought Whaley and Shead would make a difference from day 1? I'm unsure of your coaching abilities, but I don't think anyone on our current staff saw either of these guys as a "gamebreaker" for the recruiting classes. We got them because we needed depth. It's not often that a Ricky Williams or Jamaal Charles comes by, and by the tone of your posts, you make it sound like we should get one every year. Lache and Christine chose not to come here, so we got what was available.

Malcolm Brown is every bit as good as Ricky was in high school. Whether that will translate into carries in our scheme has yet to be determined, but I wouldn't put a fork in him yet. He'll play. He'll play a lot, basing my prognostication on how well our current group of OL and RB guys are playing.

11..Mack passed on CM to take Whaley. CM would have come here if offered. Whaley was clearly the best back on the field last spring. Maybe he did "eat" himself out of a job, but he was a top back in HS. I actually coached against him in basketball his junior year. He was a heck of physical specimen. Who knows why he failed to come into 2 a days in shape when it was his job to lose. Fozzy, Hills, Newton weren't on anyone's radar. Depth was not what we needed. We needed a starter.

For the record, WE chose not to take Seastrunk. He had no choice regarding UT.
I like CM. He was/is a good back. I think we goofed on that one.

"Sure about that? Shead was the strongest and possibly fastest running back on the team last year. Those on the inside say its mental and game speed and he asked to be redshirted. He had a nice preseason and would probably be starting right now if not shirted."

Shead was not "on the team last year". He was playing high school ball.
Am I sure about what I said? I'm only sure about what I was told, which I passed on in the thread. The physical maturity relates to handling the game speed as well as the punishment. As for the mental part, I don't question that, I just was not told that.

Jeez there's a lot wrong with this thread.

The funniest was A) saying Shead was on the team last season while insulting somebody else and B) saying he's the fastest RB on the team. That would be D.J. Monroe. You know, that guy who's one of the five fastest players in the country? He's no RB? Oh, okay, how about Foz Whittaker?

Also, everybody who was into recruiting knew Michael was a take over Whaley (except for the offensive coaching staff outside of Major). Coaches screwed that one up big time and it's showing right now.

Jamaal Charles had a huge freshman season, so much so that one sports commentator (can't remember which one, might have been Trev Alberts) said he would rather have JC as an every-down back than Reggie Bush. Whether that was a legitimate claim or not, it demonstrates how on-the-radar JC was.

Benson played as a freshman. The consternation about him as, yes, they didn't play him against OU. Just like they didn't play VY against Arkie in 2003. Both horrible mistakes. The staff seems to be getting the best players on the field (other than at OL and Monroe) now.

Yup, as I had said in an earlier post in this thread..looks like my OP got railroaded.
Glad to see GoHornsGo has my back on the facts! 'preciate your support!!

I'd say huge considering that we split the bill between Charles and 4 other rushers that season. Without Charles, we don't win in Columbus. Yes, injuries banged him up, but he would have been the primary back without them.
