wow, i went to a BBQ place in Huntsville, AL (where i now live) yesterday with some guys. they told me it was really really good. well, i ordered a turkey sandwich and a pork sandwich. IT WAS NOT GOOD. man do i miss Texas BBQ. the pork sandwich had coleslaw and mayo on it. who does this? i would KILL for a beef brisket sandwich from Rudy's right now.

DUDE! you are in the land of the ignerant BBQ heathens who worship the false god SAUCE.

If you want real BBQ you gotta do it yourself.

Wal-Mart supercenters are your friend (at least here in another part of the land of BBQ heathens, Florida).

Wal-Mart supercenters here carry cryovac WHOLE briskets and pits that will do a bang up job of cooking them and the charcoal and mesquite and hickory wood you will need.

Oh and don't get your hopes up if you see a "BBQ" place that serves "Texas Style brisket". There's a couple of them in Orlando (one of them called something or other's Texas BBQ) that suckered me in in a moment of desperation and I ordered and LO it was NOT GOOD, one of them sliced the brisket paper thin so it was dry and tasteless the other (the "Texas BBQ" place) sliced the brisket and then SHREDDED IT

********!! The one that sliced the brisket paper thin (Bubalou's BBQ) has pretty good fried catfish though.

There IS one place in Miami that you can get passable BBQ, Shorty's. Their brisket is pretty good, they slice it correclty and the sauce is kept in bottles on the table where it belongs. The sauce is pretty good on their french fries. Their BBQ dosen't need it. The guy that started the place was from Georgia but there has to have been a Texan in the woodpile somewhere along the way.

Good luck with satisfying your BBQ needs.

Origino, was this bbq place Bob Gibson's by any chance? When I lived in Pensacola Beach, I used to go to Decatur on business and some of my customers took me to Bob Gibson's. It was the suck! I ordered the bbq chicken and they asked me if I wanted white sauce with it. White sauce I said! What the hell is that? It is a vinegar and mayonaisse sauce with black pepper.

I almost threw up on the counter. Suffice it to say, I never went back. I feel for you brother.

well, their white sauce was really bad. i love pork ribs, so thats ok. the pork sandwich would have been ok without the coleslaw and mayo. good god.

As others have said, it's all about the swine in them parts. Not only that, but shredded and topped with slaw is the preferred plating. I'm not a slaw man myself, but the pork on its own can be rather tasty. I don't even attempt to compare it to Texas 'cue, but that's only because it's an entirely different animal (pun intended).

Whenever you see "BBQ" anywhere east of Texarkana, just translate it to "pulled pork" in your head so you don't go in with any expectations.

I kinda like Sonny's which is based in Florida. Granted, it's a bad, pale, whitewashed & bastardized version of what we genuinely do here in Texas, but y'know...
