Maisel article on why aggy left the Big 12

just read that article. you beat me to posting the link!

paints aggy as a sore loser and college football fans as the ones that lose out because of the 100+ years of tradition that are being thrown away.

Main reason aggie left is stupidity. No one can tell me that if they agreed to the joint tv contract that Texas offered in the first place that they wouldn't be here now and lovin' it.

After 60 years (that's right.) of watching UT football, I can say I will never miss the Aggies. I grew tired of their hick style long ago. I would ten times watch an OU game than watch or go to College Station...or have them here wandering up Congress Avenue.

I'm surprised they didn't leave long ago. They should have when they had a real chance

Bryant was a big name when hired as was Sherrill. Slocum is a definite no and Bible was a "sort of". Many years ago I heard a story that A&M wanted to hire former Notre Dame coach Frank Leahy in the late 50's but he said no for health reasons which were a legitimate problem for him.

There are so many great points in this article it's hard to choose which one is the best...
Through the lean times and the occasional flush ones, the Aggies always had their pride. Them being so full of themselves may have made Aggie jokes resonate to the rest of us. But Aggie pride also fueled an unconquerable optimism that bordered on braggadocio. Aggie players played better, ran faster and tackled harder, whether they did or not. Their fans believed, no matter what the scoreboard said. As the saying goes, Aggies don't lose, they just run out of time.

aggy went after Bo Schembechler before they hired Sherrill. Bo had no interest in taking the job, but used aggy to get a pay raise at Michigan.

Would we be content playing second fiddle to anybody? Ever notice what happens to Texas coaches who don't beat OU or A&M? Ask Royal or Akers or McWilliams or Mackovic.

Royal got kicked to the curb when OU kept getting the best of him.

We demand a successful program. The Aggies want to be Texas.

So they are off to the SEC. I suspect it is a move they will regret and will crush what is left of Old Army. The Aggies will become just another real big state university, which is where they have been heading for a good while, albeit a very good state university.

On the other hand, if they ever wanted to free themselves of their UT demons, this is as good a shot as they will likely get.

They may actually be able to recruit a lot better as a result of being in the best conference, which it is at present. And if they are, it means they will be getting some players we would have got. And if it helps other SEC teams recruit here better, that could hurt us too.

IF, after Mack leaves, we get another mediocre coach, which we have done on occasion, our program could become a 7-5 or 8-4 also ran for a good time. Who wants that? NOt the Aggies.

Like I said, I think they made a mistake but understand why they think it is their best chance.

They made a good hire in picking a semi successful pro coach and in their next hire they may get the next Frank Beamer or Bill Snyder, someone who can really elevate their game.

Vatech and KState were not much before they hired superb coaches nobody else noticed. A&M may get lucky.
