I've tried Skype and never liked the dinky crap phones you had to buy to use the service.
So I just signed up for something new. It's called Magicjack from magicjack.com. It's a small usb device that allows you to plug in a normal home telephone and talk over the internet.
I was skeptical but their standard offer is 30 days free trial, so nothing to lose. It works great and installs without doing anything but plugging in the usb device. The voice quality in and outbound is exactly like a land line. I can tell no difference at all.
For $40 you get the device, local and long distance for a year, caller id, voicemail, call forward, the whole smear. Plus they will assign you a number based on your choice of area code.
That's it. This is a PSA for geeks that were looking for the next best thing.
