I read about this thing last year, but though it was some sort of scam... Read about it again last month and decided to get it... right after that, I saw some commercial about it on TV... The freaking thing works allsome...

Basically, you plug it into your PC... it installs a phone out program to it, but you don't actually use it... all you do is connect an actual phone to the device and make and receive calls to anywhere in the US, Canada and PR... the cool thing is that it assigns you a phone number from any area code that they have, and once activated you can use it from any computer...

I'm taking it to my mom that lives in Mexico and she will have an Austin (512) number that she can use to call any number in the US at no charge... She can also receive calls...

If you go on a trip overseas, all you need is a high speed internet connection and any phone with a regular jack and you can make calls to and from that phone as if you were in Austin...

Allsome little gadget...

BTW, it's only $19 a YEAR for phone service...

As far as I know all you need is a USB port on your pc, and a high speed connection... It should work fine on satellite Internet...

I'm gonna use it for a couple of weeks and make sure there are no problems, then call and cancel my phone service and save myself $40/month.

There was consumer report from a news station in Dallas where someone bought a magic jack and it didnt work for them because of their area code. They had to get the station involved to get thier money back on the money back garauntee. You may want to verify which area codes this thing works for before buying it.

Hell if it's that good, I'm going to look into it also. I have a phone and internet bundle from AT&T. So not sure how much I can save, but if it's $40 a month difference, then I'm trying it out.

any reviews on the awesome auger or hercules hooks?

btw, how well does it work when you call 911?

and why not just turn off your home phone and go with the cell phone exclusively?

How would this work for my alarm system monitoring? The only reason I have a land line is for the alarm. I have pondered going to their cell type calling system but it is cheaper to have the land line for now. It is bundled so that helps.

But if there is a way to get this linked up with the alarm hookup then I may be going to UVerse once I get my HDTV.

Besides, they have their own Bowl Game now. I kept thinking of this thread every time they mentioned it or had a commercial for it. I will cringe if next year there is a ShamWOW Bowl.

dang-str8, if you go to their website and look under FAQ section, it says you need to purchase international minutes. Are you sure calling to Mexico is free?

I assume he is calling his mom who has a VoIP connection also. If he is calling a landline in Mexico, then I would expect there to be an additional charge.
