Magic Jack

Magic Jack is a device that you plug into your computer and you can then talk free to anyone in the US and Canada. It costs $40 the first year and $20 per year from then on. There are no other fees. This should allow you to get rid of your land line I suppose.

Go to magicjack.com to read about it.

My financial planner uses it and loves it. When he called me the other day he broke up a couple of times but other than that the sound was strong and clear.

Is anyone here using it and, if so, what is your experience? I don't know if it would handle our alarm system so I will have to check that out but the cost is right, that is for sure.

I've had Magic Jack for about 3 months - and it works great. Voicemail works fine too. I don't have any problems with it and use it as my private business line instead of AT&T. I paid $30 for the usb device and I pay $20 a year for unlimted calling over the net. I use Comcast here in Houston and I can't speak to satellite usage nor the secuirty system. But, I like $20 a year instead of $50 a month. That's a no brainer.

Here's the most important part I forgot to mention. This usb device has a standard RJ-11 port. You can plug in any normal house phone into it. You don't have to buy some clanky toy looking phone ala Skype.

I bought one for my daughter to take with her to Australia this semester. She has a local Austin number and can make/receive calls for free. It works well when she takes the trouble to plug it in - which is not as often as I would've liked.
