People in Brownwood/Early were absolutely floored that Mack himself would visit their town(s). I was told they bussed in junior high kids and Mack and Tolley stayed for four hours giving advice on physical conditioning, skills, and encouragement. This article doesn't do justice to the positive impact Mack and Tolley had on these communities.

Thanks, Austin180 - that is good stuff.

Sometimes, the less renowned and publicized efforts that Mack makes to do "the little things" that can make so much difference in recruiting are more impressive than the more spectacular moments involving nation-wide sports-media coverage of the signing of a handful of the Country's top college-football prospects.

This special trip to Brownwood/Early (to express our appreciation of Kenny Vacarro and his hometown) is a prime example, imo, of the real reason why Mack Brown is such an effective recruiter and such an exemplary representative of The University of Texas. And now, just watch Kenny Vaccaro end up helping the Horns, one way or another, on or off the football field ... not to mention the good will, earned on the merits, that the Horns enjoy in his home community.

This is what keeps the Horns on top in Texas.

Thanks again for the report.

Hook 'em.

Besides that, they get to stop and eat BBQ at Tommy Coopers, etc., if they map it out right. And, I'll bet they do...

I have often thought if it would not be much better than an in home visit to see a kid at his school. If a coach shows up and talks to all the kids even the 7th and 8th grade players what an effect it would have. Those kids would probably go on through the rest of high school pretty much wanting to go to that school. Those team mates would also be more likely to influence their buddy's decision feeling that they know the coach.

This relationship building with Texas high school coaches, players and fans really pays future dividends. This is one big reason why Mack is so successful in recruiting Texas players. It works for UT.
Those who criticize him for not doing more nationally, should consider the recruiting philosophy under Mack, and think about whether it would be better to go in another direction.

Mack just keeps taking coaching to higher and higher levels. Carroll, Meyer and others keep getting their names put at the top, all based on recent championships, but in my opinion Mack is the consummate coach in the game. He's the complete package.

On another note, that was one of the shortest articles I've ever seen for what must have been really big news for that community.
