Mack Brown - Governor of Texas

I remember that coming up about 2000. At the time, I thought that the quality of head coach at UT was more important to my quality of life than who is governor. Of course, I had no idea what a bad governor Rick Perry would turn out to be.

Not sure that Mack would be willing to alienate approximately half the state just by choosing to add an R or D to the end of his name. If you look at his political gift giving I'm pretty sure he gave to both GWB and BHO.

I don't see it happening. Athletes and people associated with athletics are speculated to be good candidates in Texas, but they usually aren't, and most know not to try. See Nolan Ryan who knew not to try and Craig James, whose effort fizzled out like a bad fart. The problem that they have is that they think their fame will translate into votes, and though it can help with low-information voters in a general election, it can't be a substitute for building a network of grassroots supporters in the primary election, and that takes years of effort and hard work to build, no matter how famous you are. Most athletes just aren't motivated enough to do all that.

Scott Turner did it the smart way. If anything he downplays his NFL career, has a career outside of football, busted his *** for a few years to build grassroots support, and ran for something realistic for a political newcomer (state representative). He's doing it the right way, and instead of being a defeated washed up political spare like Crag James, he has a very bright political future. He'll probably be a statewide officeholder or on Capitol Hill within the next ten years.

If Mack ran as a Democrat, he'd lose because Democrats don't win statewide offices even against crappy Republicans. I also just can't imagine a football coach being liberal enough to win a primary. I just don't see him pandering to gays, illegal aliens, and God-haters, and if he tried, it wouldn't look natural. If he ran as a Republican, he'd have to get through a primary election. And let's be honest. A GOP primary election is going to be disproportionately Aggie, and if your claim to fame is your association with the University of Texas, that's not going to be helpful to you. Huge numbers of Aggies would vote against for no reason other than that.

To win the republican primary in Texas, you need to have a solid group of business interests looking for potential kick back to get you off the ground. A lot of politicians seems to have these connections through their previous business ventures. Most sports players, Ryan being the exception, haven't built these business relationships.

FEC website shows modest contributions to W in 2000. Shows far more substantial donations to President Obama in 2008 and 2012. All donations that I found are made in Sally's name. Which I would assume is done to keep Mack's name out of it.
