What is it with Mack that has allowed him to be such a successful recruiter?
I was thinking about the possiblity of Major taking the reigns one day and I wandered if it's a system that Mack can pass along for continued success in this area, or if it's pure living room salesmanship, which would be much harder to maintain.
I know that Texas and Austin are appealing regardless, but Mack was highly successful at UNC as well, which despite it's alluring characteristics, was a basketball school in a basketball conference.
I'm sure the answer is a combination of the two, but does anyone have any more in depth insight into his success?

From what I have read and seen regarding Mack and his approach to recruiting, here is what I see that makes him successful:

1. First of all he is representing The University of Texas - that opens most all minds and doors
2. Mack is a good person and he comes through as sincere right off
3. Because of this, Mack is able to establish a high level of trust very early on - with both recruits and parents
4. Mack is just a great salesman (most know this) - he knows how to find needs and he then sells to those needs what he and UT have to offer
5. Mack knows how to paint an incredibly bright & positive picture - tell the story of UT and Texas Football
6. He probably knows how to skillfully weave in success stories of present and past players that a recruit can identify with
7. He knows how to sell the family concept to the recruit and the parents - we take care of each other on an off the field, etc.
8. I suspect Mack challanges the recruit with the offer of a scholarship to: give 100% on the field, go to class and get your degree and be a good citizen.

Add,

9. Mack sticks to certain rules on recruiting and does not try to do anything that is so clearly out of the ordinary (or out of bounds, legally) for any recruit. This makes it a little tougher for him to land out of state recruits who are not dreaming to become a longhorn.

10. No.9 however ensures that he always has a top10 or at least top-15 class with Texas talent, and sometimes a top-3 type class when the chis fall right in terms of Texas talent and the UT depth chart.

11. Mack also has a certain set of steady and relatively consistent rules and schemes, both in recruiting and on field - and these are rather well-known. Again, this has positive and negative effects, but it certainly again ensures some consistency in recruiting - because there will always be enough recruits/parents who appreciate Mack's approaches.

12. Mack's relationship with Texas HS coaches. There's a reason he's worked so hard to stay in good standing with them.

12. His continual effort's to recruit a majority of players from the state of Texas

Not to meniton the sex with hot wimminz and free liquor and street drugs and huge cash payoffs and... oh wait... this is not TEXAGS..I'm sorry let me start again... not to mention that he is dead level honest with the players past, present and future...

Yeah, I've been around since the old 360 days and I visit here very often but I dont post over here, not too much... I dont know why, I just dont... want to see my opinions go to die...

Mack is one of the best recruiters, bar none. For all of those posters who criticize the Longhorn coaching staff for not going after more out-of-state recruits, they should read this ESPN recruiting article, which talks about the relationships that need to be established with H.S. coaches...

Recruiting relationships pay off on signing day

It's hard to get in on a top OOS recruit if there isn't a prior relationship with his H.S. coaches and/or if the player doesn't already list Texas as one of his top schools. It's the same reason that Pete Carroll doesn't recruit many players from Texas (even though USC is a top program and is located in a very attractive location).

After having met Mack, I have to agree with almost all of the statements before and would like to add one more crucial thing that has been another common denominator here and elsewhere; Loyalty to the Belief in those he comes into contact with.

Some, including myself see this as a fault at times, but then again, if one has to endure this principle there are surely going to be tremendous upsides and downsides equally as erratic.

I would personally love to see Davis go elsewhere, but I have to give him credit in some games and in some periods. Davis also has his recruiting successes. I sat next to and spoke with recruits that really wanted to be coached by Davis. I think it's a dead end.

Nonetheless, when a coach provides Loyalty and Belief in his most valuable assets they will return a hefty sum, possibly more than they have ever done so before.

It is really a positive thing to have a solid coaching staff that parents isn't a carousel to incoming parents. Most parents are here for the first time, no matter how many times the recruiting cycle has come and gone, and they want to know that they are sending their children to a good place. Mack and Co. will always be successful wherever he ends up b/c he and his team will provide that feeling.
