My sponsor kid made the dean's list so I'm getting him a computer. I asked what he wants.

He wants a macbook which is in direct contravention to being on the dean's list so I suspect he hacked into the computer and changed his grades.

So I tell him get me the prices and we will see:

So he comes back with:

13 inch white
2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
120GB hard drive1
Combo drive
$1,099.00

with 2 GB memory (no other changes)

$1,499.00

Is there anyone on the planet dumb enough to pay 400 USD for a 25 dollar piece of memory?

me, unfortunately. i made that mistake when i bought an ibook in 2004. not only did it cost me double what i could have bought the extra memory for just about anywhere else, but the upgrade required that the computer be special ordered from china or something where they do the memory and hard drive add ons. it ended up taking like 3 weeks after the order to finally get it. live and learn i guess.

It's been a while since I purchased notebook/laptop memory - is it really only $25/gig?

Also, if you do get the 1 GB, see if it comes in a single DIMM, or is two 512 MB DIMMs. That way if/when you upgrade the memory to 2 GB you wont have to replace both DIMMs.

I would wait. Compal (that's Chinese for Dell, Toshiba and HP) is coming out with a badass new cooling scheme (the back of the screen) is a huge cooling plate. SSDs that cost less than your first born are coming out and AMD will eventually get their act together and release a Fusion chip. I would say that Christmas of '09 is the prime time to buy a laptop.

Of course, I am a nerd and run linux on a desktop and a laptop (Fedora 8 and Ubuntu 7.10).

Is there that big of a difference b/t the Macbook and the Macbook Pro. I made the switch to mac 1.5 yrs ago and havent looked back and as far as being underpowered, I am not sure about that. I have the stock 2.16 Core Duo with 2 GB RAM and 160 GB HD (replaced myself with faster SATA)
Currently I am running:
Firefox 3 beta 5
Office 2008 including Entourage
VMWare Fusion running x86_64 CentOS 5 with a production server (our software company's product)
Final Cut Express
iTunes
Sandvox (web dev suite)

I havent had to reboot in weeks and I can gurantee that most windows laptops would buckle under that load. This thing runs like a champ and has been a solid work laptop for almost 2 years. Cant say that about any dell I have ever owned.

why the mac hate? for a student, they do everything you would want and more in a simple, sleek package. internet, office, music, movies, pictures, and graphics. macbook holla.

i'm rocking an old g4 powerbook and it gets most of my **** done. my wife's black macbook is sweet as well.

there might be a redesign of the macbook in June if he could hold off. What exactly is a sponsor kid? And where can i apply?

I had always been a PC user until I bought a Macbook in August. The computer is still as blazing fast as it was when I bought the sucker and starts up super quick when turning it on or on restarts. That alone is worthy enough of buying one. My brother has a Sony Vaio laptop that is maybe a year older and takes FOREVER to start up. I love how the Macs are clean and not running crap MS products slowing the machine down.

The whole presentation of web pages is elegant. The MS Office suite on it is different from what I am used to but it is not surprising the folks at MS want to **** over Mac users. I bought the Airport Extreme and it was the easiest network ever to set up. Great products.

Well I didn't know that Compal also builds for Apple. i assumed that they used a different supplier since all of their hardware is f'ing proprietary. At the same time, Asus builds their own stuff, and I think that Lenovo does as well.

On a MBP. VMWare Fusion ($78) rules. I have XP on it and run a pretty complex database software on it for my company. Plus, if I ever have to have Windows, it's here. LIke having 2 computers, only my Mac always works.

Thanks for the reply everyone!

I know I don't NEED 4 GB... but it's so cheap I felt like maybe I should upgrade anyway.

I use my PC laptop for work, and my Macbook for fun (music, video, and photo editing) Photoshop + iTunes + online surfing + pron can be a memory hog
