I have a new office now, and I want a mac for it. i want one, to be able to sync via .mac, my iphone, office computer, and mac book at home.

I will be forced to run Windows XP on it, in order to run Pro Doc (legal software).

What is the easiest way to do this? My guess is to use VMWare Fusion. If i use that, do I still need boot camp?

also, with all this dual OS ****, would it be pretty necessary for me to upgrade to a iMac with 2G RAM? I would think so, but I have no idea.

I ask, because they don't have any of the 20" 2.0 macs available refurbished with the 2G RAM, and I need this thing now, so I was going to go to the retail store to buy one today if necessary.

also, the legal software must be linked up to a windows based word processor, so I will also be installing MS Word, XP version (not entire Office program).
 
VMware's Fusion replaces Bootcamp. I run XP under Fusion for one app I need that isn't available for Mac OS and it works great. Windows apps just show up in the Dock as though they were Mac OS apps and files are easily transferred between operating systems through a shared folder. Therefore, you could use Office for Mac if you wanted. It's generally considered to be a better implementation of Office than the one for Windows.
 
I am leery of running mac office though, since pro doc starts up word itself and dumps data into the opened word doc directly. I thing that causes a snag if it opens the mac office.

What about ram? It is about $300 difference in price, with respect to 1g refurbished vs. 2g new machine.
 
i could do that. i will do that. I will now pay $1081 for a 4g iMac, instead of $1299 for a 2g.

AND, I can use my wife's $100 iPhone rebate.

So what's the inside **** on getting cheap copies of VMWare Fusion, Windows XP, and Word (windows)?
 
I'll admit to being an idiot but is there any difference between the $82 RAM set and the $152 RAM set other than manufacturer (and in the case of the cheapest and most expensive on the page both are generic)?
 
I've bought RAM from the place that's listed for $82 with no issues. Just make sure there's a return or exchange option if there's an issue. Also, you'll note that the top several vendors advertise iMac compatibility so you should be fine.
 
How does Fusion compare with Parallels? I installed Vista (I know, it was stupid but Vista was $60 cheaper than XP and I made a mistake) using Parallels and things worked fine for a while but lately I've had some strange goings on that have made me nervous.
 
also, if you know any american airlines employees they have a partner program that knocks a bit of dough off the price. check around. i use it all the time since my mom works for AA.

we recently bought my wife a 24" imac and it's been great. i put 4Gb ram in there and called it a day.
 
Parallels was the early leader, but Fusion has been winning most of the head-to-head comparisons recently. It seems that there is one area where Parallels is better, but I don't recall what it is. I haven't had any issues with Fusion/XP, but I don't have to run it a lot. Never tried Parallels, but others on this board have.
 
I have no experience with Fusion. I have parallels on my macpro at work, and it works great except it seems to be a ram hog, not suprisingly.
 
You can only sync the iPhone in one place in my experience. I keep hoping they're going to fix that ****.

Anyone with a workaround for a locked phone, feel free to correct me.

that is correct. my iPhone will be synched to my macbook only, like it is now.

however, I can sync the iCal on the macbook, via ".mac" to my office iMac.

problem solved (will have to work out the fact that i have two separate calendars set up in my iCal.
 
Stay with Fusion.

Parallels will grab any RAM that is "free". The longer it runs the more resources it thinks it needs.

We went away from this where I work and my techs couldn't be happier.

But that is just my opinion.
