Mac owners: Printer recommendation, please

Just purchased a new iMac; next on my shopping list is a printer. I guess the "all-in-one" is the way to go, though I really don't need a fax. Will be printing primarily photos, but some text. What does Hornfans Nation recommend? Thanks!

I have an HP Photosmart C309g printer that sits on my home wireless network, so none of my computers needs to be connected to it directly. I bought it because HP printers seem to work better with non-Windows computers and I have 2 Linux and 1 WIndows machine on my network. Couldn't be happier with it. Works like a champ.

I have a wireless Epson and I am very happy with it. Although I really like HP printers, the ink and toner prices prices kill me.

I bought a Lexmark S305 and it works great for me with my iMac. It was $59.95 so I did not spend very much on it.

Don't get suckered in my a low initial price for the printer. Printer companies make very little money on the printer itself. All the money is in the ink. HP is known to be the worst as far as high ink costs go. Having said that we're on our second wireless HP printer as they seem to play very nice with our Mac household.

Ask yourself if you really need the ability to print your own photos. If you do a lot of them, it's far lower cost to send them to a service for printing. Unless you need a few immediately, it also requires much less of your time. Most local printers can have photos ready within an hour. Also, if you're picky about the color, you'll probably have to reprint your photos a few times to dial in the color which drives up your cost and time.

I gave up color printing years ago for this reason. It just wasn't worth the cost and time. I use a black and white laser printer for routine printing. It's cheap and fast. Small photo orders that I need quickly go to Walgreens down the street. Larger orders go to Costco that I pick up on regular shopping trips.

I've used Mpix for photo printing for years, very happy with them. I don't do any color printing at home, very little printing of any kind anymore.
