I had no idea that Bum invented the gap/D position numbering scheme. 2-techniques, etc. As far as I know everybody uses that nowadays.
 
When Phillips arrived in Port Neches in Spring of 1963, spring practice looked like the Texas HS Coaches Association Convention. One writer estimated that as many as 600 coaches came to watch him install the defense.

In the fall of either 63 or 64, PNG had an open date, and that week the Cowboys were hosting the Packers. Coach Landry had Bum come to Dallas to try to install that defense to stifle the Packers offense. As I recall, Bart Starr & company were stifled to scoring something in the 40s.
 
While Bum's defense was known for its great LBs like Brazille, Bethea, and Bingham, it was Curley Culp that anchored Bum's D and made it work.
