The San Antonio event was smaller and more intimate. It was an adjunct of the Texas High School Coaches Association events over the weekend there.
It was held in the Sunset Pavilion, a covered outdoor facility next to the San Antonio convention center. Hot, but not miserable. Parking was $5.
The San Antonio Longhorn Club, affiliated with the Longhorn Foundation, sponsored it. There was plenty of iced tea and lemonade and some sacks (all free), and a cash bar.
I got the impression the coaches had arrived there right after some glad-handing with the high school coaches.
The best feature of the format was that we were able to talk with all the coaches that attended -- and that was most of them. I talked with Muschamp for a while, Major for a number of minutes, Mad Dog, Akina, and Mack, among others.
Mack spoke for a while and was his usual inspirational self.
The Austin event, held at the Hyatt, was a more formal setting, a get-together of Austinites that often attend such white table cloth gatherings. The $50 per person event included lunch; the food was decent, although the meat was tough. Parking was $3.
Ron Franklin conducted a small round table with Mack and a couple of the coaches. Nice to see Franklin again.
I liked both the one in San Antonio and the one in Austin. For the Austin event, my table got on the 6:00 KVUE news (we didn't know that), but I got several emails from friends with photos/video pointing that out. Being pampered with the meal and all the pageantry was nice.
The San Antonio event was very enjoyable too -- mostly because of the access to the coaches and the opportunity to get a sense of their personalities. Great people, all of them.
EDIT: If anyone attended last Friday, please post comments on this thread. The organizers would appreciate any feedback. And thanks for supporting the event!
My colleagues at the Austin Sports Commission are hosting an inaugural luncheon to kick off the Longhorn and Texas HS football season. Ron Franklin of ESPN will host a chat with Mack Brown, Greg Davis and Will Muschamp. Craig Way will MC.
