Luggage Brands-- What's good?

LHF68 and I are trying to pick out some luggage. We've picked out some stuff that we think was a good deal, but we're not really sure. (we've been looking at Ross, Marshall, stores like that.)

So what's a good, reliable brand of luggage? We know Samsonite is a good one, but we can't afford it, even at closeout prices.

What other brands are good? We've seen what we think are good deals on luggage by Olympia and Delsey, but I don't really know much about them.

Any advice would be appriciated!

It might be worth a call down to the Samsonite Outlet in San Marcos. I've found some great deals down there before. Really reasonable prices. You never know, they might have something in your price range.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Samsonite's economy brand American Tourist? Might be something to consider ... Samsonite reputation and quality and a lower price?

I was at the outlet this weekend-- couldn't afford anything in there

Yes, American Touristor is made by Samsonite, but the AT suitcases we've looked at weren't very nice-- we're looking specifically for quality, and the AT bags I've seen didn't have any reinforcement in the sides.

just picked up a samsonite bag reg $340 at dillards for $85. go to dillards and macys and dig around. i was able to get my samsonite stuff cheaper there than ross/marshalls etc...

I would also consider getting the lightest luggage even if it costs a little more. The airlines are really cracking down on weight restrictions with stiffer fees and I only see it getting worse.

The wife and I just got bags. We ended up going to TJ Maxx and picked up a set of Delsey bags.

We were initially considering Swiss Gear and Eddie Bauer, but the Delsey bags seemed more durable.

I'll echo what has been said above. Especially if you do international travel, weight is something to consider. Don't go for super heavy bags.

Also, I do remember a Dillard's ad in the statesman a while back. Probably in January I think. Anyway, they had some three-piece Samsonite sets, reg. of like $450, on sale for $99 for the whole set. Something like a 21", 25", and 30" in the set. I'm sure that particular sale is gone, but they might have something else going on right now. Worth checking out.

Of couse, you can also go this route ... The Link

I still use an old samsonite garment bag for business travel. I am on my 2nd in the last 10 years and after 2 million miles. So I have been happy

TravelPro kicks all kinds of ***. Buy it at a dept store when they have a 50% off sale. Well worth the $.

L.L. Bean's rolling duffle.

Not too terribly expensive and easy to move around with. Face it, any luggage you buy is going to get beat to ****. With travel restrictions what they are now (weight and security) there isn't any valid reason for ultra expensive hard cases. Plus, these are much easier to store when not being used.

Convo begins and ends with Tumi, imo, but if you can't afford Samsonite, you'll have a hard time affording Tumi, I would assume.

Tumi is really good stuff and comes with a lifetime warranty. I have a computer bag that I have traveled with for the last 12 years and only a couple zippers have broken. But they fixed them free and the bag is still going strong. As the other poster mentioned, Tumi is expensive but it will last a long long time.

It is well worth it to make the "investment" and get something like Tumi or others with lifetime warranties.....

I have been stupid over the past 3 years or so and bought cheaper at Tuesday Morning or Nordstrom Rack, got a nice set of Swiss Gear two years ago at Nordstom Rack for like 119 or so with a large roller, 21'' carry on roller and additional accessories.....good deal....but about to fall apart. It may be my xmas request this year to get a tumi carry roller, and then build on it. I have a Tumi carmet bag and it is awesome.

I've lived out of one of these rollerbags four days a week for the last 5 years. Purdy Neat by Luggage Works

It's kind of heavy, but has lots of reinforcement.

It's been thrown around by countless baggage handlers. It's been rolled down a thousand staircases, I don't even bother to pick it up, just roll it right down. It's been run over by the tug vehicle that pushes airplanes away from gates. It's got some scratches, but nothing is bent or damaged at all. Not so much as a squeaky wheel.

It's constructed in modules. If any part of it breaks, it can be easily repaired. But I've never needed to repair a thing on it.

I second the Purdy Neat bags..It's been a favorite of airline crews for years. I've had mine for a long time and very pleased with it.
