Lubbock

Cheap cost of living. Alcohol by the drink in restaurants, but no package sales within the city limits. Lots of dust. Even more wind. 50 Yard Line or Double Nickel for steak. Spanky's for fried cheese. Lots of STDs, but mainly among the townies (not the college kids). No Chippendales dancers allowed, or they'll be arrested. Depot District is lame, but Triple J has decent microbrews. Orlando's for Italian. Fox & Hound is a good place to watch a game. If you have kids, Joyland looks like a deathtrap. Lots of golf, but the wind wreaks havoc; Ralls Course is the best public course in town. Stars & Stripes Drive In is worth it just for the Chihuahua Sandwich. If you're single and not in school, good luck finding a woman older than 20 who isn't divorced and/or has kids. More crime than you'd expect for a city of its size. Flying in and out of the airport is a thrilling experience. United Market Street is Lubbock's answer to Central Market. You can get anywhere in town within 15 minutes, even during "rush hour."

That's all I got right now. What other info do you want?

Lots of churches. Summer evenings are fabulous-cool and clear, especially compared to central Texas. Very, very few Democrats. So-so public schools. Excellent hunting within sixty miles-not so much for the fishing. (although Alan Henry is good) The golf isn't half bad-yards and yards of roll. MamaRita's is a good time, so is Copper Caboose. Blissfully close to Santa Fe, Ruidoso, and Cloudcroft. Lots of UFOs.

Amazingly stupid blond girls?
Beware-be very ware. I used to think that way-thirty years later, my little blond from Lubbock turned out to be "amazingly brilliant".

Unless you're in college I think it sucks pretty big balls. If you want to do anything somewhere besides Lubbock the nearest city is 300 miles away. Almost all restaurants are chain restaurants. The wind sucks and on days that it is nice there's not much to do outside except I guess play golf. All in all, my wife and I are counting the days until we can leave. Sorry.

Cagle's. Fifty Yard Line. Caprock Cafe. Rita's. Lubbock Club. Orlando's. Caboose. Gardski's. Mesquite's. Stubb's. Richard's freakin Fried Chicken-the best chicken I have ever eaten anywhere. Great coffee shops. Burgeoning music scene-try Sugar Brown's. JC's Burritos.(ask for the Bob Knight Special) Two Guys Pizza. Harrigan's is still good after all these years. Great Wall for Chinese. Lots of other little local dives, plus all the usual chain restaraunts. It ain't Austin, but you won't starve.

I remember back in the early '70's, when the whole town went into mourning. One of the two trees in town died from too much sand and wind....or maybe it was just loneliness and boredom.

Actually, there is one good thing I like about the town - you can't get lost. The town is set up on a grid system, with street alphabetical in one direction, and numbered streets going the other way. If you passed 8th grade geometry, you can handle getting around in Lubbock without a GPS, no matter how "directionally challenged" you are..

You got to go to the Dixie Dog in Wolfforth (just SW of town) and get yourself some heaven on a stick. Two dogs and a coke for less than five bucks. This is where David Thomas went to high school.
