Van resigns at LSU. I'm surprised if they don't a replacement already lined up. I thought Van was only supposed to be a transition for a couple of years to provide some cushion from the Pokey Chapman era.
Will be interesting to see who they bring in to begin the 'Forthan era.' LOL I saw a post on a scouting board that referred to coaching Forthan as "taming the wild child." Looks like she's going to be a good one though.
Apparently Van wanted one more year and Pat Summitt, a close friend, spoke out and said he should have gotten it. Not saying I agree or that LSU cares what Pat thinks, just passing along what was said. He probably wanted to see what he could do with Forthan in the lineup, and who could blame him, but I can also see where this might be a good time for a transition. I have no idea who's on the short list except the AD said some (most?) are currently coaching in the tourney so he can't do much until post-season play is complete.
It's possible Mays may be looking again but if he is the main recruiter for Texas and helped to bring in Forthan, could be he will be looked at as someone who needs to stay to provide some continuity. I know that didn't happen at Texas, but different circumstances-differnt outcomes?
Speaking of Forthan, did anyone see the article in the AAS about Forthan? Apparently she came to Georgetown in August 2009 to live with Clarissa Davis and her husband. Now the commitment to LSU makes sense.
I tried to post the link but it didn't work, thanks to those below this post who posted the link. And thanks for the link to the story about her ejection - I knew she was a "wild child" so perhaps that had something to do with her not being at Texas too.
Even though Georgetown beat Pflugerville in the regional final, Enemkpali was the game's top performer. I thknk Forthan had 23 points, but Nneka scored 28 and pulled down 13 rbs (along with 3 blks and 2 steals). Pretty special given who she was going up against, but then again we knew that already! Can't wait to see her in action next year!
yeah, just saw that. Really surprising but I guess it's pretty much the same thing--go head to head against Stanford or Tenn. It did look like she was really making headway in getting UCLA competitive with Stanford.
Definitely surprising IMO as I wouldn't think LSU is considered a step up from UCLA. Perhaps she thinks recruiting will be easier, not sure about that though. Or it could be as simple as lots more money and she likes her chances with Forthan the next four years.
Might even be as simple as trying to get back closer to a culture where it sounds like she spent many years...the Left Coast is NOT for everyone. And while Baton Rouge is not exactly what one tends to choose to call home, it COULD be a stepping stone to something else in the region over the next five to seven years.
Having talked to some coaches today, we agreed that she absolutely made the right move for a few different reasons. LSU under performed this year, they have 3 all Americans on their roster plus the addition of a top 15 recruiting class this year and arguably one of the most dominant players in the class. Two, she's a southern girl and everyone wants to be in a "homely" environment if possible. We also felt as though if she can maintain success at LSU she will be without a doubt a shoe in candidate when pat retires which may be sooner than most think. And lastly, I think she saw the writing on the wall. UCLA is a tough place to recruit to when your sandwiched in between CAL, STAN, and USC. Because let us take notice of the fact that two kids were transfer students this (walker, dixon). Things will be much easier for her at LSU because she will only have to compete recruiting wise with one school rather than 4
That makes a lot of sense, utfann. I hadn't thought about the possibility of her being a candidate for Summitt's job one day - guess a lot will depend on how things go at LSU. But no question the Tigers will be loaded with talent next year so she's stepping into a pretty nice situation.
