I'm sure Leon Landry appreciated this:

I'm sure Landry appreciated the standing ovation he got when he left with an injury. In fact, I know he did because he made sure and waved to the crowd.

Also, that sign is towards Gillespie, UCI's coach. He's the one that started it saying all kinds of things about the fans here and that we didn't know the Civil War was over. We were just talking some trash back.

But don't let the facts get in the way of the tired We're Texas, we're classy, LSU sucks, their fans are trashy meme and making a fool out of yourself.

marked you down for pc and can't take a joke.

Again. Gillespie. Cracked. On. Our. Fans. Before. The. Regional. This. Was. Their. Way. Of. Joking. With. Him.

Gillespie is the one who brought up the Civil War and our fans. What in the hell does that need to get brought up for?

Damn, some of yall are ignorant.

I think the sign is kind of funny, but if someone didn't know that the Irvine coach had been bagging on LSU fans, they might well wonder why a Civil War taunt was aimed at freaking CALIFORNIA.

And, as the South found out, you can't win a war with cotton and arrogance.

It's funny, I can see why some would get offended though, and that may have been somewhat racy. Still, the Civil War involved two parts of the country fighting for their ideals, more than just slavery. The fact that they (LSU fans) were biting back at the UCI coach makes it relatively harmless and worth a chuckle IMO.

His apology was as strong as was necessary. Those fans are rude and vicious and may not know the Civil War is over.

Hook'em!!!

Slavery was definitely an issue, but there was also more to the Civil War than JUST slavery. Maybe you too should study up on it.

To clear my previous post up, slavery too is an ideal and although it was a major force in the secession of the states from the union, there were other major factors that led to hostility between the two sides.

I have studied for forty odd years on the subject, and have yet to find one reason for the Civil War that did not point to slavery.

Please share with us your known "ideals" that caused the war, that had nothing to do with slavery.

Well I think you can point to the north's dominance of manufacturing and the placement of tariffs that hurt the south and restricted needed imports. You can also look at political differences and the battle between states rights vs. federal rights.

But I digress you obviously have studied this much more than me (I haven't been alive for 40 years). You win. Just not a fan of how many villanize the south during the antebellum period and afterwards, I agree slavery is wrong and am glad we do not have slavery.

Rugby...class act

Wahoo...because it is the single most devastating thing that has ever happened to this country, and it is still a point of contention today, as is obvious from this thread.

anyone who can't simply see that the civil war was unfortunate and slavery sucks needs to have their head checked. does it REALLY matter what all the other details are? absolutely not. people that get bogged down in stupid details that cloud the main point give me huge tired head.

While I agree that slavery wasn't the only issue, pretty much all of the other issues stemmed from slavery. The states' rights argument was 100% about slavery. The southern states felt that it was a decision to be made by individual states. The northern states felt that it was within the province of the federal government to outlaw or restrict it in any and all states. The south was constitutionally correct in their argument, but it was a thinly veiled disguise as an excuse for war.

The trade argument was, at its core, also about slavery. Northern states were undercut by southern states because of slave labor, which led to the imposition of tariffs and other trade barriers to prevent the south from becoming what would have been an incredibly wealthy nation at that time, had it been its own nation.

You can put any number of labels on it, but at the root of it all, you will find slavery.
