LOST 5/11

i have a lot more questions now.

i did find it interesting that second born/man in black had the same exact views on people as his fake mother did
when we first met him, Jacob had brought the black rock to the island, he said the same exact quote is fake mother said about people,"they are corrupt blah blah it all ends the same." very interesting, not as evil as he has been portrayed though

Weird symbolism here: The mom says "Take this cup and drink," which is what Jesus said at the Last Supper to his disciples, and then MIB says to Jacob at one point that he sees Jacob "Looking down on us from above." Almost is pointing out Jacob as some Christ-like figure.

So Jacob forces MIB down the hole and he becomes Smokey. Are we to assume that the hole leads to some sort of Hell?

MIB always plays with the black rocks--the ship that crashes on the Island bringing Richard is the Black Rock.

I still don't get how Jacob and MIB have their powers--that never is fully explained. I guess it is something we're just supposed to accept, I guess.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful island.
On that island there was a cave.
In that cave there was a beautiful golden light.
The same golden light that glows in every boy and girl.

If that golden light goes out on the island,
it goes out in every boy and girl everywhere.
You don't want that golden light to go out
in every boy and girl, do you?

You must protect the beautiful golden light
from greedy people who are never satisfied
with the amount of golden light they're given.
Greedy people can destroy the golden light.

You're willing to spend your life protecting the
golden light from greedy people aren't you?
Even if it means living alone forever on that beautiful island and
killing all the greedy people who come to steal the light.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Holy cow, the most complicated TV show plot ever devised
revolves around something akin to a fairly tale.

Was the smoke monster released or is it MiB's soul? I think there is some element of MiB in the smoke monster (if only his memories). This episode spent time developing MiB's "disappointment" in mankind. He mentioned that he lived with them for 30 years and they are all insane, etc. This sets up the battle between Jacob and the MiB/smoke monster when bringing people to the island. Jacob believes that mankind is flawed but generally good, and MiB/smoke monster believes they are all corruptible. So, Jacob brings people to the island believing they are good and will not allow or assist MiB/smoke monster to leave the island. So far, Jacob has been right.

Overall, I think the episode was a disappointment. It could have easily been explained in half the time, while being folded into another storyline. Also, I started watching Lost in the 2nd or 3rd season and didn't know about the Adam and Eve skeletons, but thought that was dumb to directly reference it. I would have much more enjoyed picking that tidbit up if I ever chose to re-watch the entire series. Lost has a lot of subtle details, but that was a sledgehammer to the nose.

Lastly, I think a lot of questions will be intentionally left unanswered when the series is over. The whole series is about two sides to the same coin. Good (brother) vs. evil (brother). Science vs. faith. Destiny vs. free will. Etc. The writers have to realize their viewers opinions fall into these categories and will interpret things differently. Leave some things open-ended and the fans will be able to discuss the episodes indefinitely and the series will therefor never really die.

I assuemed that a lot would ne left unanswered, I just didn't think that what they did answer was going to be another question.
Where did Jacob get his powers from? His mother. Well where did she get hers from? Who is she?

I didn't care that much about Adam and Eve, it couldve been anybody. It should be interesting to see what else gets answered.
I can't wait til the showdown with Jack and FLocke. Its funny how Locke never wanted to leave the island, was only attacked by smokey once and left alone all the other times, even staring it face to face. Thought it was his destiny to remain on the island and thought the island wasn't through him. Jack wanted to leave til he finally left, then ever since he left he needed and wanted to come back, made it back and now he talks about destiny and the island isn't through him

I'm done

So Jacob is not the man-being possesed of the wisdom of the ages, but rather the dumber more gullible brother?

If the message is (and I dont know if it is) that Locke Monster did not start off as evil -- but that it was his enviroment that made him bad, then I have a problem with it. I have never really been a fan of the Twinkie Defense, Ozzie made me do it and his mom did not love him stuff. Not to mention that the whole thing is self-contradictory.

The Light in the Cave made me think of Don Quixote.

I was pretty much "lost" as to the logic of water + wheel + light = exit/escape. And how it later turns into a frozen big wheel.

Is there any chance the fake mom was a smoke monster herself? Otherwise, how could she have single-handedly killed all those people? She seemed old and frail by then. Likewise, how could she have known what would happen to someone who entered?

I hope they dont cheap trick us at the end, as in the whole thing was a dream sequnce of Aaron, or something. Speaking of whom, the significance of Aaron to the island fell off a cliff.

I think they will leave the story of how the Jacob's Mother got there unresolved.

In fact, I've resigned myself to acknowledge that nearly everything will remain unresolved.

Well I wrote this long novel about my thoughts but Hornfans gave me an error and didn't allow me to post it or recover it

Summary,
That episode made me feel bad for MIB (who wouldn't leave the woman who killed your mother, kidnapped you at birth and has lied to you you're whole life). Also lost some of the stigma Jacob had considering he still had a child's mind even @ age 43, no where near the all-knowing god like man we knew him as.

Aaron's significance really was that he was born on the island, since it seems that the only other children we've seen born on the island was Jacob and his Brother. I think that's as far as they go with that story, similar to when they dropped Walts special abilty story line.

As long as the ending doesn't go to a Black screen like sapranos I will be ok. Hopefully they are smarter than to have Jack wake up as the plane is landing in LA and he realize that it was a vodka induced dream he had. Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T

It is all explained by Morrissey/Marr

Take me out tonight
where there's music and there's people
who are young and alive
driving in your car
I never never want to go home
because I haven't got one anymore

Take me out tonight
because I want to see people
and I want to see life
driving in your car
oh please don't drop me home
because it's not my home, it's their home
and I'm welcome no more

There is a light that never goes out
There is a light that never goes out
There is a light that never goes out
There is a light that never goes out

Check out the lyrics from "All Along the Watchtower", which accompanied the "preview" for next week's episode:

"There must be some kinda way out of here"
Said the joker to the thief
"There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief"

"Businessmen, they, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody of it is worth", hey

"No reason to get excited"
The thief, he kindly spoke
"There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke"

"But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour is getting late"

All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants too

Outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl

Any significance to this song? Doubt it, but kind of cool.

I don't know how this thing is going to end in any other way but being a disappointment. There are 3 hours left, and I feel there are way too many loose ends to tie up, and that which has been 'explained' doesn't seem to make much sense to me. For instance, who is the real mom to Jacob and MiB? Who is she really? And what about their 'adopted' mom who killed their real mom? Why did she kill the real mom? Who is she? Why does MiB never have his name spoke, but Jacob does? I mean Jacob and the mom never say his name, and of course his real mom didn't name him.... odd.

THEU, if that many questions arose from Tuesday's episode that can't possibly be explained in the next 3.5 hours, then multiply it by however many alt-timeline stories are unresolved. Then, mulitply it by however many questions are unanswered on the island in real story time, then henpeck a few msyteries from each season left unanswered. There's going to need to be an ABC series devoted to wrapping up loose ends only of LOST in order to satisfy all of our questions.

I've decided to enjoy the last few episodes like I just happened to walk into the series this season and wipe it out of my mind when it's over. Should be less frustrating than trying to make up my own answers or scouring message boards for validation of theories.

Agree with THEU and dalhorn. I was flat out pissed during most of the last 2 seasons so by this season I'm left with a 'whatever' attitude - even to the point of being glad it's almost all over, but still wanting to see what they put out there.
I want answers, but not sloppy ones like the whispers reveal.

Yeah, most of the reveals so far have been heavy-handed; the Whispers, Adam & Eve, Jack's Dad as Smoke Monster, etc. Maybe they're trying to appeal to a larger audience that just Losties, the general public that hasn't watched the show for six years.

The issue is that when you do a story of this type with really heavy mystical, theological and scientific overtones, it never looks as good when you shine the spotlight behind the curtain. The mystery was what made this story successful, and unfortunately it's inevitable that when you start trying to explain some of it, a lot of the appeal goes away.

I don't like the "origin of Jacob" angle, I think they were better served not bothering to explain it other than explaining why exactly the MIB can't leave the island. But now, unless they reveal something else, it looks like all six seasons have basically been a waste - that there is no reason MIB can't leave other than that his mommy missed him. Now that may have changed once MIB was "possessed" - and to answer another person's question, the MIB is most certainly NOT Jacob's brother. The skeleton in the cave attests to that.

I would assume that the MIB is the personification of the force in the cave - why it all of a sudden becomes evil in a person is a mystery, maybe humanity corrupts it? Maybe the fact that he was murdered corrupted things? And it may well be that now it really is dangerous to let him leave the island - but that is completely muddied now because it appears that Jacob would have had the same reaction if it really WAS his brother.

I'll be interested to hear the director's commentary on all this to see what they are trying to accomplish with this. Ultimately, if it turns out that all this is just a couple of brothers who can't play nice with each other and there are in fact no greater implications, then I'm going to be ticked off.

Smokey protecting the island makes since. I believe when somebody asked Rousseau about it she said it was a security system to protect the island. You see, that's the between the lines answers we wanted.

Another thing I just thought of, what happened to Rousseau's shipmates? They went into the hole that smokey pulled the friend into and all came back evil.

I was contemplating this episode, and realized something that I haven't seen brought up yet.
Locke's father in the alt timeline was in a plane accident 3 years ago and was left pretty much brain dead. Wasn't it 3 years ago when he was brought to the island by Ben and he locke's father stated he was in an accident then woke up there in that room on the island. Am I the only one who thinks there is something too that.
