Lost - 4/8

I've probably watched as much of this show and "get it" less than anybody. I consider myself a fairly intelligent guy, but with the time travel and everything else, well it just makes my head hurt. I'm probably the least qualified to start this thread, but here goes...

The smoke monster is behind it all. It makes people, polar bears and three-toed statues and it can even make it the 70's or eat Mr. Eko if it wants. So drop all the migraine-inducing crap about paradoxes and other stuff I can't wrap my brain around. I can understand a magic smoke monster, though, so that's got to be the answer. I wonder what I've won.

I watch it with the thought that it is reality and the island truly holds all the answers to the universe. Was that Anubis carved onto the wall where smoke monster came out?

I think it just jumped the shark.

I just now assume that everything out of Ben's mouth is a lie or not the whole truth, hidden meanings or some crap.

He is going to see the Smoke Monster? WTF?

Locke is a horrible main character, as poster said above, head spinning, will never watch that show again, then Wednesday rolls around and there is nothing else on TV, only choice is to go out and that is not really an option for me this month.

According to this article, the Ajira passengers who have the guns are really Others who had been kicked off the island and are pissed off. The question "What lies in the shadow of the statute" is their code?

Did anyone else take it that way? As much as I love Lost, I feel dumber each week.

I wont be happy until Kuato jumps out of Locke's stomach and shoots Ben, then proceeds to explain the secrets of the island to the characters.

At that point, I will open a bottle of Dom and toast the last few years of my life watching the show knowing I will never get them back.

majorwhiteapples, the show is as it always has been... a scifi show. The closer they get to the end, the more SciFi it is going to become. If that doesn't appeal to you, you are right to get out now.

This is what we "know". The island (or at least the forces on the island) possesses some form of consciousness as well as some ability to directly influence people on and off the island. The smoke monster is some extension of those forces, but is quite probably not the full extent of it (the island is capable of influencing events to ensure that individual's survive to achieve their purpose... specifically Michael). The center of that power seems to be focused in and under the Temple. In the Temple the forces are able to influence people to the point of forcing them into some sort of acolyte status which we recognize as being an "other". It would seem as though the Others under Charles Widmore were all exposed to these forces directly, though it seems as though new recruits under Ben Linus were not all exposed (unsure but it doesn't seem like Juliet has been exposed).

Periodically, by accident or intention, people are pulled to the island. Once its powers become known they seem to break off into two camps, those who wish to exploit the powers of the island and those who wish to "protect" them (the quotes are in service of the fact that we don't actually know that the powers are good or bad, specifically). It would seem as though the exploiters are directly involved with all of the construction on the island (Dharma bases, possibly even the "wheel" underground).

At this point there appear to be several people with special standing in regards to the island.
-Charles Widmore; former Others leader, banished from the island (but not it seems by the wheel)
-Eloise Hawking; former Others leader, story unclear
-Desmond; Time "traveller"
-Locke; resurrected, possibly Smoke Monster extension
-Christian Shepard; resurrected, possibly Smoke Monster extension
-Jacob; voice of the island, unknown
-Richard Alpert; ageless, He's an Other, but is also somehow distinct from them as well.

Everyone else at this point seems to have lesser status, though how much lesser remains to be seen. It would seem from this week that Ben's been kicked to a downstairs office, so it is unclear who he is answering to at this point (though the island would prefer Locke, it would seem). He's been lying the whole time, which made him seem more powerful... but clearly he is LESS than he seems.

I was a little surprised that Whidmore didn't fall into the Dharma camp. I had figured he'd wanted to exploit the island somehow and ended up getting kicked off for that reason.

Here's an interesting twist - what if the island is actually playing both sides against each other? What if somehow it feeds on this conflict, and it's basically working both sides into a state of war? I've noticed a number of times that visions seem to be inconsistent - for example, Kate being told by Claire not to bring Aaron back to the island even though that was what Ben was told had to happen. How about the island telling Jack that he shouldn't raise the child, but not telling that to Kate, even though it would have been just as applicable to her? Maybe those are plot holes, and maybe it's the island deliberately sending mixed messages?

Probably not, but hey, it's all about coming up with theories!

richard isn't wearing eye-liner, it's just the way that guy's eyes look.

i'm not sure that scene with ben and desmond ended that way. ben told sun to tell desmond "i'm sorry" and that he would understand. he's sorry for what? shooting him? killing his wife? blowing up the boat? we're seeing ben get a conscious and seem to actually care. i don't think these are lies. i think ben thought he was a goner w/ his judgement.

i like locke's new character. confident and 'all knowing' as opposed to an annoying ***** that is frantically looking to hold on to something. i'm not sure, and could have missed it, but do the other oceanic 815 ppl know anything about locke being in a wheelchair?

is locke smokey? ben falls, locke goes to figure a way to get him out. smokey comes out while locke is away. smokey goes away, locke comes back with a makeshift rope. reminds me of a comic book character.

i still think jack has a bigger role in the island that will be determined in the final season.

i wonder if the losties involved with dharma are going to be killed at the purge or incident.

I don't think we know that Christian is technically "resurrected". He may only be seen by certain people, perhaps in the way Hurley "saw" Charlie and Ana Lucia after they died.
