"The Package"
(SPOILERS!)

So the package turns out to be Desmond! I wonder how he figures to be a weapon for Widmore.

Sayid's lack of emotions or feeling seems interesting. I wonder if that's the infection. When Widmore tells Jin that if MIB gets loose, that Sun and his kid will "cease to exist", if that's because the infection causes you to lose your soul, essentially causing you to cease to exist.

I'd like to know more about the electromagnetic pockets.

sayid is coming under the spell or effects of whatever it is he is becoming. i think widmore speaks of essentially the end of the world if mib gets off island. i dont think he is speaking only that jin and family will cease to exist but that everyone will. but also, he may be speaking of only the dimension they are in will cease to exist.

It sounds like we're finally getting into the "science meets mystical" part. I guess there's only six episodes left and a lot left to address, so I have a feeling the next few episodes are going to be pretty packed.

I kind of feel like this episode was almost an obligatory "where are they now" show - the sideways episodes are interesting and all, but I have no idea if they're doing anything to actually advance the plot or explain anything, other than play a "what if" game. I guess we'll know eventually.

Two little bits "slipped" in this episode: (1) that Kate may have been a candidate at some point, but is no longer, and (2) the penalty for NotLocke escaping the island is not generic evil into the world, or simple destruction, but rather it would cause everything they know to cease to exist.

The former is interesting in as much as it has seemed to this point that the only way your name gets off the list is death. If Kate is not a candidate "anymore" then apparently there are other ways to get off the list... which implies that she may be able to get back on it.

The latter is interesting more in its implication. The "ceases to exist" can mean many things, and perhaps even the alt-world we are seeing in this season's flashes represent a time line which is different enough that it can be said that the prime-world has ceased to exist. Which is to say, NL escaping doesn't equate death and destruction, but rather a different future. Perhaps NL represents a specific paradox which Jacob is trying to contain until such time as it can no longer damage the prime-time line. I don't know, I'm still fleshing this out, but it seems to answer several mysteries, perhaps even why time travels at a different rate on the island than off it (because the island is "taking" NL to a time where he can no longer cause the paradox, so NL isn't evil so much as impatient).

Little brainstorming...

So did the bomb actually go off? The time jumps stopped, but we see Juliet intact after the "event".

Did the bomb set off the alternate timeline?

The idea that Jacob is just "stalling" NL until his time to leave the island makes the candidates unnecessary; and were it ok, in some regard, for NL to leave the island completely goes against what Jacob has demonstrated in the Richard episode. Jacob sending Richard's wife to tell him to prevent NL from leaving would be unnecessary.

My wife thinks that it's a old testament God/Devil allegory - to which I would add that Richard's role, then, would be that of Jesus. God doesn't tell us what action to follow, but Jesus came to the island to show the inhabitants the way.

I agree that scene was likely for dramatic effect, all the same, that little nugget noticeably did not come from Isabella's lips for the viewer, and Hurley seems to be firmly in Jacob's camp, if Jacob was going to lie through someone else it would be Hurley.

I really have a hard time taking conversations on Lost at face value, and knowing their love of twists, I have a hard time believing that it is going to be as simple as has been described to this point. Jacob wears white, NL wears black... and if Lost lets that paper thin imagery define these character's so thoroughly it would be the first time.
