Looks Like JCB Leaning Toward Going Pro

Thought he might be leaning slightly toward coming back, but sounds like he is looking at the money.

Cue the crowd that will say Barnes will tell him to go pro. Maybe he will or maybe not. Still can't believe Brown is going to get drafted very high. If some money is better than no money starting next year then I guess he will leave no matter if it is in the D Leagues.

Kybongo offered no comment. Probably nothing to comment on at this point.

One aspect to think about is that Brown has got to be a point guard in the pros you would think. What if he came back to work on that and raise his draft status as maybe a possible All American, even 2nd, third team or honorable mention. Just a thought. Yes, I know we have Gibbs, Felix, and probably Kybongo at pg. Just a thought.

There's no way either of these should be drafted in the first round. J'Covan is an undersized dime-a-dozen scoring guard. Kabongo still hasn't adjusted to the speed of the college game, let alone the NBA. Both would be lucky to float around the d-league for the next few years.

If J'Covan wants to support a family, he'd be better served getting a degree. Kabongo would make far more money if actually developed as a point guard and then got drafted in the 1st round in a year or two.

Agree about Joe's comments on JCB. He's a souped up AJ Abrams - one with better passing skills and less of a stroke, but can score in a wider variety of ways. But he is not going to ever develop into an NBA PG. I disagree about Kabongo. He has more upside and I would bet would be drafted higher than JCB - this year. I think he adjusted to the speed fine. His problem was being to frantic on the break, being in love with dribbling and shooting poorly. He really could take one year to develop consistent double figure scoring, and his stock would skyrocket.

I really can't blame JCB for looking now. His stock is not going to rise and he only stands to get hurt.

In the long run, Brown would be better off sticking around, earnnig All American and Academic All American laurels, leading Texas to the NCAA and picking up a couple of wins or more there and endearing himself to millions of Texas alumni and fans who will hold him in high regard long after his developmental league days are over.

How tall is Jet Terry, the 6th man off the Mavs bench? Also, Daniel Gibson has made a lot of money as a 7th or 8th man off the bench. Brown is a much more talented scorer, more elusive, and a better passer than Abrams. Brown has no fear, and excels in driving the lane, and getting to the line.

J'coven comes from a family that could use the money. He could get his degree in the off season. He is a smart kid, and knows that if he could sign a multi year deal he could make it go a long way.

I would still hold him in high regard, and wish him only the best.

I hope he stays but would understand if he left.

This may be my last straw for me and perhaps the last straw for several Longhorn basketall fans. There is no reason JCB should go pro and it would be a HUGE mistake to do this.

And please don't compare him to Jason Terry or Daniel Gibson. Jason Terry is a lethal, clutch shooter and has been one of the best scorers in the 4th quarter in the NBA in the past 5 years. What big shots has JCB hit in his career? When the game was on the line this year, how did he do? A couple of very poor possessions come to mind against a Baylor team at the FEC not to long ago. Not to mention all the other late game failings during the tough stretch against Mizzou, Kansas, etc.

And Daniel Gibson was placed in a wonderful position with the best player on the face of the planet. All Gibson had to do was camp outside the three point line and wait for King Lebron to get double and triple teamed and take aim at the basket. Where is Gibson these days now that Lebron has moved on? Unless JCB gets drafted by the Heat, it is a bad comparison.

And let's not get into the potential head case issue that seems to have gotten a bit under control toward the latter end of the season but that could rear its ugly head at any moment, and NBA GMs are fully aware of the history with JCB.

What I have said from the beginning is that Barnes really needs to get this under control immediately. JCB (if Kabongo stays) has a real opportunity to do something special with this Texas basketball team and this basketball program. If he can get his team to another Final Four and possibly a championship, then he will go down in Texas basketball lore for all of eternity. He will get a degree and (once his basketball career is over) he will be able to get a job with just about any Texas alum in this State and will have a free meal at any restaurant in Austin as long as he walks the face of this Earth. He and his family will be well taken care of. Not to mention that his stock could soar if Texas were to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament next year.

If he goes to the NBA, he will go in the second round or even go undrafted, bounce around the D-league for a couple of years, go overseas, make about $800K in 4 years (if he manages his money well after taxes, expenses, etc.) and have the rest of his life to figure out what he is going to do. And he will be all but forgotten in Austin and by Texas fans. [May be a bit of an extreme example, but you catch my drift.]

For once, make it about the school and the program over yourself. It will pay off in the long run.

I am in utter shock that some of you truly believe that Kybongo will get drafted. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY this underachieving point guard has any chance of being drafted AT ALL! He can't dibble, can't shoot and surely cannot set up a half court offense. This kid needs at least one if not 3 more years.

Joseph was a much better ballplayer than Kabongo, but he could have used another year or two. The draft is tougher for marginal guards this year and Kabongo is down the list relative to where Joseph stood. Joseph has spent plenty of time in the D league, but he is fortunate that he was drafted by one of the better managed clubs and that TJ Ford retired. The Spurs likely will keep CJ for a while.

Kabongo will not draft as high as CJ and may not be as lucky where he lands.

I also do not think you guys are taking into account that the NBA often drafts on potential. If you can get a guy in the 15-21 range that may be a lottery pick next year or in two years, teams at that level may take a chance. I could see MK falling in that category.

It is different with JCB. I think he has maxed out his potential. I think he is always going to be a middle to late second rounder (even undrafted) - whether he goes this year or next year. However, I would add the caveat that if Texas were to make a deep run in the tourney next year I could see JCB taking that momentum into the draft and squeezing into the late first round. A lot of "ifs," but it is possible.

People who work overseas don't pay taxes on the first 100k (or is it 200k?) they make. So if JCB makes 200K per year for a few years and then kicks around in the NBA as a reserve for a few years making the minimum (over 400K per year, I think) then he will be doing very well for himself.

Like I said, he can always get his degree in the off season.

All that being said, I REALLY hope he stays and leads this team to a deep NCAA March run next year.

Like kramer said above, JCB will listen to his advisors, who I hope have Brown's best interest at heart, and I hope he gets solid advice.

I have seen JCB make many clutch shots. Last year he led a 4th quarter comeback to beat KU. He was clutch in the wins over ISU. I think his clutch shooting kept us in many games this year. Without Brown, would this team have finished over .500? Maybe, maybe not.

I think some of you are overrating the talent pool in the entire NBA Draft if you think Brown isn't draft-worthy. He's definitely not dime-a-dozen. And he's also an upperclassman, so stating he "needs an extra year" won't actually promote any further growth.

Personally, I'd love to never lose another underclassmen to the NBA. I think J'Covan is probably ready to move to the next level - Kabongo needs another year.

But I went to UT for several reasons and the main one was to better myself in life. If either of these guys are in a position to "cash in", then who are we to say we wouldn't have done the same thing? I hope they're back next year, but I can't blame them for wanting to take care of themselves/their families.

Kabongo is no where near ready. His skill set leads a lot to be desired. He is fast and quick, but that's about it right now.

JCB is a player. He has a great skill set. He can shoot, score, very good passer, uses both hands well, and has a very high basketball IQ. As much as I would love to see him stay another year, I think he needs to do what's best for himself and his family.

Twitter and pay sites today all saying that Kabongo is leaving. One of the tweets apparently got to NBADraft.net, who blames his departure on all of the other Canadian Horns leaving earlier than they should have.

To that, I say we don't need any more AAU primadonnas running our game. Stick with the solid types who might not average 26/9/7 in HS, but aren't going to stick it to you in the classroom or on the court. I have a feeling that all of those dudes basically abandoned their studies after the December semester was up, so even if they wanted to, they probably wouldn't have the option to return anyhow.

Welcome, Jevan Felix. Hope you can handle the ball.
