I'm a Canon guy. Other's are Nikon or Sony guys. I would test them out, hold them, see which features a salesman talks up about the cameras... and then buy it from Amazon with no tax and free shipping.
My camera is a Canon from 2 1/2 years ago. The thing I like about it most is that its wide angle lens is still wider than anything you can find on the market. In fact, after my camera originally started dropping in price from $400 to $370 to $350 (and possibly a bit lower), when I look it up again about 6 to 9 months after I bought it, the price was back up to nearly $400. The only thing I can figure is that the wide angle is still the widest on any Canon or any other camera.
Negative about my Canon is that there isn't a pre-flash for red-eye. It just takes the picture and then you've got red eye.
Also, depending on how much you plan on carrying your camera, you might consider going a little bulkier. You get a better lens at a lower price if you don't mind something that fits in a your cargo pants pocket vs your front pocket or shirt pocket.
Yes, I want a digital one touch. And preferably one that takes care of the red eye thing & one that takes the pictures pretty quickly after pushing the button.
I believe the one we've had for about 5 years or so is a Canon A85. One of the things I didn't like about it is the delay after you press the button & the picture actually takes.
Obviously, I'm not a photo expert. I just want something fairly simple that takes good pictures. And something a little sleek so that my wife could carry it in her purse if she wants to.
Canon Powershot
My boss went to Hawaii and did a bunch of research on digital cameras. He got this one and brought back some sweet underwater pictures. The camera takes video too so he followed a turtle around and made like a 30 second video of it. It's freezeproof so you can take it skiing.
I'm planning a trip to Hawaii in Dec so I'm probably going to pick one up.
It corrects the red eye thing. It has a stabilizer so it'll be good for helicopter rides over volcanoes and such. 12.1 megapixels (outstanding). We have a sony that's probably half that and it's very clear. Some kinda blink warning thing. And shockproof.
So, it's about $50 above your maximum but if you want to take pics in the water or while skiing, it's worth it.
Thanks for the help. I went ahead & bought it last night because my wife has to have it for a wedding this weekend. I know...who the hell gets married on Texas/OU weekend?? We got a Canon Powershot 12.0 for $279.
