12,446 fans showed up Monday night to see if the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays could clinch their second playoff berth in three years.

Why don't people show up? Ticket prices? Hate the players? Hate the owners since they'll cut payroll? Hate the stadium? (It's a dome so can't be the weather.)

bad market for MLB, tampa is...personally i haven't stepped foot in the ballpark since the strike...the combo of the strike and steroid ball, making baseball a slow pitch softball beer league kept me away....only now am i considering going back....pitching and defense are back in MLB for a change.

Florida and California are the worst places to watch sports. There's too much other crap to do, so it's very easy for fans to be fairweather.

It's like the year the Heat won the NBA championship. They had to give away tickets to early round playoff games just so the arena would look full on television.

Plus a lot -- a LOT -- of people in Tampa are sworn Yankee fans, since the Yanks have had spring training there since God was a pup.

...and the first game of the playoffs there will be 50K rabid, lifetime Rays fans in the stands, waving towels...

I take this as Tampa can't / won't do well since:

1) There are other things to do.
2) Too many Yankee fans there.

Don't the Lakers and Dolphins have good attendence?
