Longhorn Band on the Longhorn Network

I learned a few days ago that the LHB is working on getting its own show on the new Longhorn Network. What sorts of things would you guys like to see on this show?

wow, good stuff. I think it would be interesting to see how a show is put together, get highlights from the practices, with a clock at the bottom of the screen showing how quickly they can put together a new show.

If memory is correct, a friend once told me LHB can put in a new show in about three practices, Mon night, Tues night, Thursday night.

Also, get plenty of video of hell week, maybe some interviews with the drum major and section leaders.

Also, plenty of video of alumni week, with interviews, interview alums from all of the decades available.

also, video of a sit down practice, curious what Texas Fight sounds like when you break it down by section. Just what do those clarinets sound like by themselves?

maybe even a senior of the week interview, talk about future plans, favorite memories.

Something like the old "Band-O-Rama". Show variety of concert groups including stage bands. Marching fanale to get the orange blood flowing.

I would like to see some "behind the scenes" planning from the directors - to show what it takes to create a half time routine. As I understand it, the Longhorn Band will produce 6 or 7 unique halftime performances in any given year.
I think having a Longhorn Band Show is an EXCELLENT idea. Our band is easily the most recognizable band in the country. ( Perhaps USC Trojan band is a close second.) Hornfans may argue over the playcalling, but everyone loves and supports the band. And the band is the best example of "Come Early.Be Loud and Wear Orange." I get goosebumps when that sea of Burnt orange musicians marches into the stadium and hits those first few notes of "Texas Fight."

Would like to see the video from the first year the LHB took the field from the SOUTH end of the Cotton Bowl agaisnt OU. Think it was about 1992. Every okie I knew almost ****. With the band marching towards us, the crowd was ape ****.

I love when the Band does the "wall to wall" pre game show where they are spread out across the whole field, and then they come to a dead stop, stop playing and shout "BEAT THE HELL OUTA OU" then resume playing and marching. Crowd goes nuts every time!

Good for the band and all you band fans, but I honestly can't think of anything I'd have less interest in watching. I would have more interest in watching the fake turf at DKR grow.

Try to imagine watching a game at DKR without the band....They are an integral part of the game day experience. Like watching a movie without a soundtrack.

slipeerock, completely agree. I love all the pageantry associated with college football (uniforms, band, traditions), etc... but just like I wouldn't care about that stuff seperate from it and certainly wouldn't care enough to watch it on tv.

I love going to high school football games too, but watching a high school badn competition would be like torture for me.

Documentary on LHB history including interview with DiNino - they guy who built the modern LHB. Would be easy to work in stuff on tryouts, show prep, traditional drills, etc.

Funny how many posts gdu has on a thread he cares nothing about. Showing off for the band nerds, I suppose.

I don't care about the band, but I do care about what the LHN shows.

Just making sure the programming directors know not everyone cares about the band when they aren't in the stadium.

Hopefully the success or failure of the Longhorn Network will not hinge upon a 30 minute show about the band. It also seems to me that there will be lots of hours of programming to fill, so why not have a show about the band. Keep in mind that the Longhorn Network will probably not show many live football games. So let the band have a show. I agree that simply watching halftime shows over and over will be boring. (I have sat through many HS Band competition and they are torture.) If I told you that ESPN was going to have a show about NFL football practice and training camp - it would sound pretty boring. But that is what "Hard Knocks" is - and it gets good ratings. Let's give this idea a chance to grow before we piss all over it.

If others want to watch a band show, that's fine with me. I am not telling anybody what to like. I would much rather watch a football team practice than a band do anything. Just putting that out there; not trying to upset anyone. I'm sure I will find most of the programming on LHN unwatchable.

would be fun to hear about the adversity the band goes through on the road. I've got a friend that was an SOB, he told me about the routine that would happen in College Station. It went something like this:

The Corps Turds would be challenged by their upperclassmen to steal a LHB hat, and they would choose to take a hat from a female band member.

So, my friend and other LHB members would run after the guy,, with the intent of beating the hell out of him, and the little sissy would drop the hat, just as he was about to be caught, so the LHB members would have to let the corps turd go.

Thank goodness that gdu is here to keep the LHN from becoming the LHB network.

I love football, and I'm sure there will be plenty of it on LHN, but I think our univerisity deserves more than a LHFB network. I certainly hope there is programing that reflects the diversity of The University, its history, its contributions, and the opportunities it offers for the future.

AND I happen to enjoy band competitions, marching, concert, whatever. I also enjoy symphonies and about any other musical performance (exept maybe Opera, or Oprah). I support performing arts. I also enjoy football competition.

Yeah, I’d love to see the behind-the-scenes about how a show is put together. I always imagine it’s something like this:

Director 1: I have this great idea, for something totally out of the box.
Director 2: Yeah, what is it?
Director 1: A latin show! You know there are a lot of Hispanics in our audience and they will like it.
Band Member: You mean, cool songs from Mexico that people actually know and can sing along to and maybe a mariachi sound to feature our awesome brass?
Director 1: No. No. I mean obscure Latin jazz numbers that make us sound important.
Director 2: That sounds great. Latin jazz is perfect for a football game.
Director 1: And there is this one song that will be a home run. It’s called Malagueña.
Director 2: Awesome! That is so creative and unexpected.
Band Member: We played that in junior high and every high school band in the country has marched to that song at least one a year for the past 40 years.
Director 1: Yeah, it’s great.
Director 2: Perfect. We can march in curves and face only side of the stadium so that the people in the first five rows can hear the trumpet solo and we can have 20 or 30 xylophones and bells on the sideline.
Director 1: I like it. Let’s do it. Next week, we can work on Mussorgsky. Football fans love that.
Band Member: OK.
