Lone Star Update 4/27

Golf points split with mens point to Texas and womens to aggy. With 3 and 1/2 points left to be awarded aggy still leads 8-7 1/2.

Points left are 1 each for M and W outdoor track, 1/2 point for softball and one point for baseball.

If there is a tie Texas retains championship.

$Bill may be a tool but there is no denying he has upgraded aggy's athletics to the point where they should win this year (assuming they get the W track, softball and baseball points). Just two years ago that was a pipe dream.

I don't think the Aggies have upgraded their athletic program. They are still too inconsistent They have done really well against UT this year and if you look at head to head games played against UT, we will end up pretty even in games won/lost....meaning in one of their best athletic years....they are still not better than us.

Once Gail and Brakin get their program going with their type of athletes....A&M will be out of the picture again.

The only program I see UT in some sort of trouble is Women's Track......Pat is an excellent coach and he hates Bev...he loves to beat her. We will see what happens.

Since the thing started it was a pipe dream. They are bound to win one eventually. What is sad about it is that we could care less about winning it as fans. We just don't want to hear their psychobabble about it if they win.

If we win this year, coming from behind, I don't care. I just care about them not being able to talk about it. I dont even care so much about the shock and pain some of thier fans would feel from snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Aggroid teams tend to choke and under perform when it counts during the NCAAs. Check out the current Director's Cup standings. Texas is second behind Stanford and way ahead in points over the sheep chasers.

We will just about always be behind Stanford for reasons we all know.

I wish they would weigh the sports by revenue or importance overall. That way smaller sports can still matter or be used in a tie-breaker or close race but not count equal or close to equal to other sports.

Water Polo or Equestrian sports should not count as much as even softball or other sports. It may be 1/2 value as say, Tennis, less than Swimming and for sure way less than Football, Basketball and Baseball. Maybe give sports a 1 to 5 rating.

Football being a 5, water polo being a 1 or a 1.5 in importance.

Way to go Men's Golf Team! We really needed this split to have a shot at maybe catching up to the Aggies.

It is still an uphill battle to win it or even get a tie. It has been mostly the women's sports that the Aggies have been dominating this year which is unfortunate because they are winning some that we used to win in such as swimming and track and field.

Anyone who does not think ATM has upgraded is nuts.

Track - both sides. Check the recent rankings.
Softball. Texas is mediocre at best under Clark.
Basketball - both sides.
Soccer. ATM is top 10.
Swimming, especially the women who beat the Lady Longhorns handily.
Golf.

Texas once dominated ATM in these sports.

Dodds and Plonskly need to turn up the heat in a few programs. They have done so in women's golf and swimming. GG will take care of women's basketball.
Women's track and softball are problematic for the foreseeable future.

Mack needs to get off his *** about the Aggies. Augie needs to fire up his program or he'll be dropping games to the milkmen also.

ATM has been on the warpath about overcoming Texas. I think Dodds and Plonsky were a bit complacent.

TEXAS used to lose the Track championship to NEBRASKA, yet they would kill them in the NCAA. A&M is starting to win the big 12 championships, but they have yet to unsettle TEXAS at Nationals. They might do it in the outdoor season, but unless they do it consistently...I don't think BEV has a problem, yet.

Softball -- A&M will be mediocre once the Gibson and Scarborough graduate.

Swimming -- TEXAS just sign the #1 class and probably the same next year.

The sears director's standings would be an indication if A&M has really upgraded their athletic program.......they are still mid twenties....just like in the past...while TEXAS is TOP 5.

They had our number this year.

Just because we have beaten their soccer program numerous times recently....it doesn't mean our program is better than their. As a soccer fan, we are quite not there yet.

TEXAS loses to teams they aren't supposed to lose to every year.......A&M beating us in some sports this year is no different from KSU beating us in football, Missouri in basketball, Tech in basketball, Tech in softball, Kansas in baseball, etc.

A&M will end up ranked higher in Softball, Women's Basketball, Baseball, Women's Swimming and probably split Golf and Track with Texas.

That is not upgrading to me!!!!!!! For a school as big as A&M and with the money they have......they should be ashamed of that result.

There have been years where the UT women carried the men and it wasn't too long ago.

Men's track used to get beat by Nebraska all the time, while the women would win the championship, Women's Tennis used to grab the championship until Baylor started recruiting outside of the USA.

Don't knock the women for having a down year....they have done pretty well throughout the years and probably better than the men.

Men's Tennis should have won BOTH titles this year and they choked. (I realize they shared the title, but they should have never lost to TECH). They lost the tourney to BU, so BU laid claim on who was the best Tennis team this year.

There are 3.5 points still up for grabs: Softball (.5), Men's & Women's Outdoor Track (1 each), and Baseball (1). Texas only needs 2 of those points to retain the "championship." That's doable.

Of course, if Texas loses, will it really
matter in the grand scheme of things?

Baseball needs to get that point for TEXAS this year. They haven't done anything especial all year long....the least they can do it beat the Aggies twice.

aggy gets 1/2 point for softball so now 8 1/2 to 7 1/2. Texas must get at least one point in track and one more point from track or baseball to tie and retain the championship.

Nationally Texas is still doing better in directors Cup and in particular sports like soccer and football where aggy got the lone star point Texas finished much higher. Still particularly in womens sports aggy is night and day different than what it was a few years ago and $bill definitly gets the credit for that.

i realize that this is completely unfair, but if they beat us by a point, i'm ready to blame mack brown for handing them a point in football that they never should have had. not that i really give a ****, but i guess i must care a little to follow the standings.

I agree with the previous poster. If we lose by one point to the ags, then it is our football team's fault. I really don't care when we win the LSS, but I know if aggy wins then they will act like it is equivalent to a national championship.

Note: The way I figue it we cannot lose by exactly one point though. We can tie or lose by 2 or 4.

true, but losing by 2 is what i mean, since the football game would be a 2 point swing and we would have tied and retained.

As far as soccer is concerned, A&M does get the point because they won the regular season game, but Texas took 2 of 3 games played during the season, winning the games with big stakes (tournament games). As a UT soccer fan, I have no complaints about how the UT-A&M games went. They can have their LS point.

Soon they will also be a power player in women's bowling.

Sarcasm aside... as big of a ******* as $Bill comes across in his weekly letters, he is doing good things for their program.

an aggy women's bowling team would probably be the only women's team in the country that had to institute a "no facial hair" policy.

I agree pantone159! I would take the better post season success than the LSS point anyday. Another encouraging thing is our cross country ladie's team showing much improvement. Over the past several years this has been an automatic point for the Aggies but this year our ladies were much improved and we were a very young team that will be back and improved this coming year. These ladies made great improvements and lost the LSS point to the Aggies by one point so naturally I look for them to really be a challenge to the Aggies this year.

Did we win this? We took the baseball point by winning the first two games. The aggy women's track team killed everyone. In men's track we are ranked 5th after the first day and aggy isn't even listed. If I recall we needed 2 points to tie meaning we would win. Can anyone clarify?

Texas needs to win either mens or women's track...I think a&m men moved up a little on saturday, so it will come down to tomorrow....but do you really care?

I couldnt tell you what sports are even counted, all that matters are football, baseball, and men's basketball...we split basketball, they took football and we took baseball.

Looking at the results from today, I think they have pulled ahead of us 16 / 13 on the mens side. 5 events so far are done, with 16 more finals on Sunday.

Hammer - Texas 3 points
Shot Put - A&M 3 points
Decathalon - Texas 10 points, A&M 3 points
Long Jump - A&M 10 points

The prelims are finished for the finals tomorrow. Aggy will beat us by a considerable amount in men's outdoor which will give them the LSS. No one cares about the majority of the sports in the LSS. Us winning in baseball is great. Sure it is always nice to beat aggy, but the big 3 in men's is the most important and the only one that sucks this past year is men's football. I'm pissed about us losing 2 in a row to them.

The fact that you all claim we should disregard this embarrassing performance tells me a lot. We have gotten soft with our current ADs, and our fans are accepting mediocrity.
Our leads in softball, track (x4), baseball, football, basketball, w. swimming, golf (x2) have all be completely dismantled by the ags the past few years. It took a complete breakdown of the entire athletic department to pull off that impressive feat, but we did it. We will lose the LSS this year and I don't see us retaking it in the foreseeable future. The ags are only getting better pretty much across the board and we are getting worse at an even more rapid rate.
