Who has tried this? For those who have utterly no idea what I am talking about, here is a little teaser:

At present I use Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop and Fedora 9 on my desktop. I have been amazed at the quality and ease of use of the software, all of which is free. I can do more on my computer than I could before- Blender, GIMP, Open Office, Inkscape, Thunder/Sunbird, etc. The only proprietary items on my computer are the nVidia drivers and the Adobe Flash plugins. At this point, my beef is the lack of DVD playback, which is due to my unwillingness to use propietary software.

just wait till you need to access PACS (xrays) and electronic medical records for your office(s) and hospital(s) from home. welcome to microsoft hell!!!!

I still haven't been able to use GtkPOD on the 3rd gen Nanos. And I can't get Wine to run Itunes.

Other than that, I've been able to resolve other issues using Linux or Fedora forums. The geeks on the forum are faster than calling customer service.

Do you use yum or livna?

I have Ubuntu 8.04, and I installed libdvdcss and can play DVDs with Totem. Actually I think that I could play DVDs even before installing libdvdcss.

1.) I installed VLC player and proceeded to waste an hour watching 300 (I fast forward to the killin'). Problem solved.

2.) I use yum and livna. Livna publishes a meta package that makes all of their stuff available via yum. They still don't have obscure .rpms, which is something that I prefer ubuntu for. You can find a .deb file for basically anything. I still want to get Gromacs working, though its .rpm binaries hate Fedora and its GUI uses KDE libraries. There is a brilliant guy of Romanian descent in our class who knows his way around linux really well, so I ask him if worse comes to worse. He's also interested in protein folding, so it helps that I have piqued his interest here.

3.) There is open source EMR software...google open EMR and you can track it down. EMR requires so much customization that open source stuff has a good shot in that arena.
