Linux Ubuntu

Does anyone use this distribution of Linux regularly or have any experience with it? How are some of it's different applications? Anything bad about it?

I'm currently running Vista and am satisfied with it except for how it uses memory. Decided to see what Linux is all about. Right now (as in a few minutes ago) I have Ubuntu running as a virtual desktop using the VMware Player, so it's not my dedicated OS yet because I'm just testing it out.

Maybe in the future I'll create a partition on the hard drive for it.

I am a fedora user, but am running ubuntu on another workstation that I administer at work. It is quite good, and perfect for a linux newbie.

You should probably run ubuntu in the VM for the next few months, before booting directly off of it. learn to administer stuff, change settings, etc. do these things with disdain. recover from any faults yourself. if you can't, let the vm rollback and recover.

I have only Ubuntu on my old laptop, and it works great. I dual boot Ubuntu and XP on my desktop but have had some problems getting my video card drivers to work properly with my 8800GT. I'm still a linux n00b myself, though. Overall, Ubuntu's really cool- especially if you aren't running cutting edge hardware. Very nice visual effects, openoffice is great. I would recommend setting up a dual boot once you feel more comfortable with the terminal, etc.

if you don't mind doing tweaking and having to play around with stuff, Linux is cool.

If you just want to do basic computing things, Linux is really cool.

If you're doing any things that may tax your machine Vista or XP are the best options out there unless you really are comfortable with playing with things.

Went ahead an partitioned off a section of the hard drive and dual boot my system.

It works really well so far. Vista is still the main OS, but this is a nice alternative for light usage as you stated.
