Linux Flavor?

What's the simplest to use linux distribution for a linux novice? I tried slackware but couldn't compile it or make it do anything so I installed Win2k server. Now my Win2k server will not boot and am ready to try linux again. Any ideas?

Knoppix Live is pretty cool if you want to check out linux without having to mess with whatever OS is currently installed on the system. If you are unfamiliar with the distro, it's a linux boot CD which contains quite a few tools for desktop and server tasks.

As it is a read-only boot CD, you can "transfer" the OS to the hard drive, but if you decide to go that route, I would pick from one of the distros mentioned above.

I was new to linux about a year ago. I started with fedora and later moved to mandrake. Fedora seemed easy enough to use but I think I had some compatibility issues and it kept crashing. I didn't have the ability to fix whatever was wrong so I decided just to try a different one. I installed mandrake several months ago and have had few problems with it. I don't do much other than run a specific software package (that runs better in linux) and surf the internet. But for someone who knew nothing about linux beforehand it's been a nice place to start and learn how to do the basic linux commands.

I tried slackware because I liked the name and a friend recommended it.

It looks like Mandrake has the most votes. Thanks for your input folks.

Off to bed...
