Linebackers

I checked out the defensive stats and noticed that 3 of the top 4 in tackles were linebackers. Last year, it always seemed like it was corners and safeties listed in the first 4 before we even got to the LBs. Also the tackles seemed to be evenly distributed which shows that everyone on the team is involved. I know its early but these are very good signs of things to come.

Norton had better stats than Bobino. I don't think he will take over the starting job just yet but he could earn more playing time throughout the game if he lives up to his potential. Muck and Kindle making their presence felt. Earnest got some playing time as well thus the depth is very good this year....even 2 young guys Sam and Keenan were in there.

Give me a less statistical analysis. What was your "feel" concerning the LB play?

Did they blitz much?

A "feel" for the linebacker play from someone at the game:

I didnt notice much blitzing, but I bet they did. The reason I say that is guys were running free in the secondary all game long. No sacks, but the FAU QB was under pressure all day. something i hadnt seen before was kindle lined up in a 3 point stance at DE and orakpo lined up out wide covering a receiver. thought that was interesting.

the 4 guys that played the most were muckelroy, kindle, bobino, and norton. muckelroy was the most impressive. kindle looked overaggresive and was fooled at times.

our run d was really good. i was a little bit worried about this since we are starting an undersized DT this year.

All played good solid games. I particularily remember Muckleroy and Norton penetrating running plays early on and either tackling the RB or disrupting the play so others could make the tackle. Several impressive tackles for a loss, no gain or short gains on the RB's. The DL kept pressure on the QB most of the night - he had to make quick decisions and throw in a hurry many times. Kindle is back - I was very pleased with what I saw and his passion for playing is obvious. The LB's can only get better & more confident as they all get experienced and comfortable in the Muschamp Defense and the DL gets the same.

LB's played great. Very pleased with Sergio's play. Norton had a couple of big hits. Emmanuel Acho had a big hit in the 4th quarter - he's going to be a great player.

The Norton hit and tackle at the goalline was very impressive. Noth him and Sergio had to go cover receivers on that play which scared me for a 2nd until Norton basically knocked his dude out.

I understand the Bobino as the honary starter thing, but with Kindle-Norton-Muck, we definitely have the best 3 LBs during the Brown era. Big and fast. It's like having 2 DJs out there. They look like something you'd see out of the SEC. I expect great things out of them this year. And, I wasn't dissappointed by what I saw last night.

Norton breaking up that screen pass by knocking that dude off of his feet was the kind of **** I have been waiting for for a LONG time.

Not linebacker related but Blake Gideon had a very nice coverage and hit on an attempted screen. The ball was overthrown but Gideon had gotten through the blockers and blew the receiver up. Literally flipped the guy over in mid-air. I like gideon.

I don't have stats, but I don't think we blitzed much. I don't think we showed the whole package and it's probably not all in yet anyway. We blitzed the slot cover guy a few times, but not a lot. The QB was getting rid of the ball quick. They were doubling Sergio with the back when he lined up as a DE. Not a lot of batted balls from the tackles. Would like to see them get their hands up more.

It looked like we were blitzing a lot but it was the dl penetrating almost like they were unblocked. So close to a sack so many times. The QB was rushed almost every play and in the first half managed to make a lot of big throws with a great release. Second half was a different game.

Gideon is nails, but won't see alot of reps. Kindle reminds me of this guy that used to play here,,,,, Derrick......Smith?....Green?.......no, Johnson!

Ok, clarification. Colt went back to pass and had time to make first, second and third reads. I do not believe he was knocked down all game. One play was a quaterback draw that might have been counted as a sack. The OL did a monster job and blitzes were picked up very well.
The Florida quaterback had to face a lineman coming through on almost every play but was apparently getting his primary receiver open. I do not know exactly what constitutes a hurry but most plays he was faced with a pass or smash situation. He spent a lot of time on the ground and his uniform was a mess by halftime. Mack said in his press conference that he felt the qb would play at the next level so he is obviously very good at a quick release. We were playing too loose in the first half and that combination resulted in the passing yardage gained the first half.

You are right. I am in Colorado and had to watch the game on PPV. I should ask for my thirty bucks back because it must have been just a computer generated game. Just before halftime they showed a closeup of the FAU quaterback and made mention that his uniform was dirty because he spent so much time on the ground. They were watching the same simulated game I was. Damn that D line looked so good in that game . Sorry you missed it.
