Life of a Diesel Truck

So, I'm looking at used Trucks, and sometimes I see these F250's or Silverado 2500's with Diesel engines. Sometimes they have >150k miles. Now I have heard that these diesels can last for close to 300K if properly cared for. Question is: Is this still true for the newer models (2003 or up)? What would I need to look for on a truck with 150K to see if it would last another 150K or if it would crap out in 20K? What other maintenance do these trucks need? Do the transmissions crap out before the engine?

I was recently in the market for a diesel. I looked at several F250, used at or near the 100K mark. Several dealer & mechanic friends advised that the Ford F250 has a reputation for "crapping out" at the 100K mark. But with the prices nose diving, a new model may not be such a bad idea. I do not know much about the Chevy.

Fords use International/Navistar engines.

Chevy's use Isuzu engines.

The old ford 7.3's were workhorses, extremely rugged.

Isuzu has been building medium and light duty diesels for a long time. They are a good engine.

I'm certainly no expert; I'm sure other posters know this subject better than I.
The Cummins in the Dodge is a terrific durable engine, but they are so ******* noisy I hate them.
