Hello there, my old friendNot so long ago it was til the end
We played outside in the pouring rain
On our way up the road we started over again

Youre livin a dream....wo you on top
My mind is achin....lord it wont stop
Thats how it happens....livin life by the drop

Up and down that road in our worn out shoes
Talkin bout good things and signin the blues
You went your way....i stayed behind
We both knew it was just a matter of time

Youre livin a dream....wo you on top
My mind is achin....lord it wont stop
Thats how it happens....livin life by the drop

No wasted time....were alive today
Churnin up the past....theres no easier way
Times been between us....a means to an end
God its good to be here walkin together my friend

Youre livin a dream....wo you on top
My mind is achin....lord it wont stop
Thats how it happens....livin life by the drop

Great song by one of the greatest ever. In fact, it's the only acoustic number I can recall he recorded. It's about his addiction to alcohol which he finally kicked
After beating the bottle, he recorded one of his best albums sober, but he was taken from us not long after in a helicopter crash. I remember the day the nurses came and told me in the OR that he died. I felt like the wind had been sucked out of me.

Easily one of the greatest. So glad I got to see him one last time a few months before he died. There really isn't ayone who could play and sing at the same time like he did.

Just looked up Rolling Stones list of 100 Greatest Guitarists. SRV is at #7. Can't really argue with the 6 ahead of him.The Link

1. Jemi Hendrix
2. Duane Allmond
3. BB King
4. Eric Clapton
5. Robert Johnson
6. Chuck Berry

LIFE WITHOUT YOU

Oo oo now baby....tell me how have you been
We all have missed you....and the way you grin
The day is necessary....every now and then
For souls to move on....givin life back again, and again
Fly on fly on....fly on my friend
Go on....live again....love again

Day after day....night after night
Sittin here singin every minute....as the years go passing by....by, by, by
Long look in the mirror....weve come face to face
Wishin all the love we took for granted....love we have today

Life without you....all the love you passed my way
The angels have waited for so long....now they have their way
Take your place....

My favorite SRV song. RIP, Stevie Ray.

One of my all time favorites. When I was reading Eric Clapton's autobiography (great book), he said he was supposed to be in the helicopter that day, but SRV asked him if he could take his place in order to get home quicker. Clapton really felt bad about it. Life by the drop is right.

RIP Stevie.

A true legend and my personal all time favorite musician.

I love this quote from BB King aboutSRV.

"I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie missed on both counts, but I never noticed".

I never understood the reasoning behind the Rolling Stones top 100. Seems like they are ranking blues guitarists, although Hendrix was not straight blues, Allman was southern rock, and Berry was rockabilly. But that still leaves out guys like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and Slash.

It's so hard to believe it's been 19 years. Seems like it was just yesterday that I was a 19 year old riding the West Campus bus wondering why the radio station just played 3 SRV songs in a row. Then the DJ came on and gave us the news. Very, very sad day.

I think SRV is pretty unique as a technician of blues guitar. What always strikes me is how strong, clean, and articulate his notes are. For a guy who lived (for a time) with such a lack of self-control as he did, it's interesting that he seems to have obsessed over having absolutely precise control over his hands. It just seems as though he never missed a note, even live. His unrivaled technical ability combined with his improvisational genius make him the best blues guitarist, in my opinion.

If we think about Hendrix as a blues player, there was a certain sloppiness (not in a bad way) to Hendrix's approach, an almost impressionistic approach. Some might call it a psychedelic approach, I suppose. He'd apply unusual modes and techniques to the traditional blues structures. And of course the Hendrix approach was far more tied to distortion and other effects. For all his greatness, there's times when I wonder where he's going with a particular run of notes. I never wonder about that when I listen to SRV. I'd say Hendrix was far more experimental as a blues guitarist, whereas SRV was definitely more of a blues purist.

For those who have never seen it, SRV's performance of "Texas Flood" at El Mocambo is considered (by many, including me) the greatest few minutes of blues guitar ever heard. SRV Texas Flood at El Mocambo

Thanks for the link, Coel. I hadn't seen that before. I remember the first time I heard 'Texas Flood' on the radio on the way home from work. I think my jaw actually hit the floorboards of the car. I'd been playing rock & blues as an amateur for quite some time and had listened to all the great guitarists, but I'd never heard the blues played like THAT!. In my book, Stevie is the best blues guitarist of all time, and one of the top 5-6 guitarists ever.
