Fact is, the cable networks by and large decided they're not going to raise everyone's bill by 40 cents to put the LHN on, or eat 40 cents per bill themselves.

This situation shows poor planning by UT. Unless the only purpose of the LHN was the check, then UT should have done more to ensure that ESPN would offer the network at a rate reasonable enough to actually have the network seen by more than dozens of people.

It's simple marketing. Regardess of how much your buyer wants to pay you, you need to see what their final offer price is going to be, since you want your product out and being used. Otherwise it's not sold, and regardless of the ink on paper promised in the contract if the buyer isn't making money then you're not going to either - they'll break the contract and let the lawyers fight it out.
