NORMAN — Some Oklahoma football players might liken strength and conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt to a military drill sergeant. Now Britt Mitchell can make a first-hand comparison.

... The freshman offensive lineman left the Sooners late last week and has enlisted with the United States Marine Corps, OU sports information director Kenny Mossman confirmed
Tuesday.

“He has the coaching staff’s full support in pursuing something that has been attractive to him for some time,” Mossman said.

Mitchell, a 6-foot-6, 311-pound freshman tackle from Roscoe, Texas, enrolled at OU in January and went through winter and spring workouts with the team. He had begun summer training with Schmidt before deciding on a military career.

He has my support, but do know that he lost his status as a Texan when he signed with OU.

Regardless, best of luck to this young man. Sounds like the kind of guy we want on our side.

Lol I'm A Sooner in the service and he'll make all of us proud!!!!Somethings go beyond A great Rivalry(Even the best one)Before A Texan or A Sooner he's an American God bless his safe return! And God bless you all for your well wishes.

This thread just brought to mind this question:

What about guys like Daryl Hunt? OU's all time leading tackler, out of permian, then had a stellar six years for the Oilers and still resides in Houston. Does he get his "Texan" card back?

anyhow good luck to the kid. here's to standing up tall at 6-6 but going into battle at 5-6.

Best wished to Britt for a successful and safe military career. Thank you for your service commitment.

i'd wish any sooner the best of luck in serving our country. Texan or not.

God Bless!

libertytxn, to further answer your question, no, he does not. But he can still **** off. Congrats to him for his NFL time but he can do the **** off dance.

Hell, the oilers aren't Texans anymore either. He might qualify as a Tennesseean. I don't know their rules since they were never a nation.

I wish him the best and hope that he comes home from battle safely.

Or gets assigned to running Toys for Tots in Spokane or someplace like it.

I bet he comes out of boot camp at 245-250-- too much running, marching and pull-ups to stay 311
I was an Army paratrooper and we could hang with Marines--I went to jump school and jumpmaster school with Marines-- those guys were pull-up fanatics-- we did push-ups-- pulling 311 lbs up will get old-- especially when they have him do 10 before he goes to eat-- I wonder how many pull-ups any of our 300 lb lineman can do? He will get to carry a machine gun and ammo since he's big-- I didn't mind being a smaller guy. Good luck on the next 14 weeks of your life.

Does OU not have an Navy ROTC program? I figured they would have encouraged him to do that and play football. It can be done. We had a kid at UT who was a freshman on the 05 MNC team and did ROTC. I graduated that spring so no idea whether he stuck with ROTC
