LEE will he be a Ranger

Does anyone think that the rangers will pony up the needed money to keep Lee or are the yankees just going to throw him a lot of money. I hope Texas can put this deal together.

To me it doesnt look good:

-We cant offer him as much
-Better pitching weather up there
-Its THE YANKEES.

We do have a better team around him though - better than they can field. Heres hoping though

Texas is in good shape without him too. Especially since you can take that $20 MM/year and apply it elsewhere, like a starter, a reliever, and a first baseman.

Lee is 32 now so he will be 36 in 4 years. Is any 36 old pitcher worth $20 to $25 million a year? Love to retain him, but on the surface this doesn't sound like a good deal. We will just have to trust Nolan.

The Yankees did not offer arbitration to Jeter, so they are stockpiling the $$ for Lee.

Richie and Greggo were talking about this. Greggo claims there is a 10% chance we get to keep Lee. Greggo says Lee wants 7 years!! How can he possibly demand 7 years?

Anyway, Greggo said we will offer 6, but probably not 7 years. He thinks the Yankees will offer 7 years, so off to NY he goes.

What helps the Rangers here imo, is that Cliff would be playing 2nd chair to CC for 7 years if he goes to NY.

His ego has to be too big to be 2nd. He has to want to be #1.

so, maybe 6 years/140 million to stay here.

"How can he possibly demand 7 years?"

Because he can. Same thing with Jeter demanding "Yankee Legacy" money for his .270 average and expecting an actual RAISE from his 2001 contract.

Lee is one of the best in the game, so you need a long-term deal to get money now, rather than when you wear out 3-4 years from now. Plus, who knows? Maybe he'll last as long as Clemens.

I still think that if it costs the Rangers over $20MM/year to keep him, even if it's only for 6 years, then they can use that money elsewhere. Teams like the Padres, Twins, and Giants have shown that you don't need to pump all of your resources into one person to win.

Not end of the World either way, Rangers get extra picks in the draft for losing Lee plus they have enough money to improve their team big time if he goes to Yanks. Rangers cannot compete with the Yanks when it comes to money, I dont think any team can?

Yankees actually upped the offer to 7-years, but the average per year dropped...when the Yankees lost Crawford, they had no backup plan.

Yanks have 7 years for 175 million, Rangers cannot compete with that but Lee remember Jeter's range at Short is not very good and his hitting is down and the Closer for the Yanks is getting up there in age, the yankees are getting a year older and I do not think a year better so if Lee wants to sign with Yanks go ahead but the Yankees are a aging team.

Boston forced New York's hand. As a result Kansas City basically can cherry pick the Rangers' minor league system as the Rangers will need Greinke just to keep up with New York and Boston.

The flip side with Greinke is he's younger, under contract for 2 more years, and cheaper ($13.5 mil/year). Just something to consider.

I guess Texas's money man billionaire oilman Ray Davis could make this happen if the rangers management wants Lee. Question is would he be worth what could be 160 to 200 M?

Saw it on sports center this morning that the rangers do have deep pockets if they want to use them. As far as the figure, just a range i believe the winning bid would have to be in to secure lee's services. Point being that Texas can pony up as much money as the yankees if they want to.

trek, if you were answering my question, it was directed at warrior who said that Yankees are at 7 years / $175mil.

I heard that on ESPN Austin, I think the number is too high? But I am hearing Lee will go with the Most Money offer?

time to say "thank you Cliff lee" for the service given. Let's just hope they quit spitting on your wife up there.

And goodbye to any shot at getting back to a WS anytime soon. Even if we get Greinke he might wilt in the pressure if his condition hasn't improved.

MLBPA frowns upon free agents taking lower offers, because then it hurts the livelihood of every other player out there. But Lee would probably go with the higher offer whether it was the Yankees or anyone else.

For some reason I think that Texas is staying in just to drive up the price. Nolan knows better than to give a 33 year old guy $20+ million a year for 7 years.

Heard today on ESPN Austin that the Phillies are the 3rd team in on Cliff Lee along with Yanks and Rangers.

Wow: It would make for an awesome rotation in Phliadelphia, Halliday, Lee, Oswalt, Hamels and Blanton.
