Leasing/living in downtown Austin

My brother and sister-in-law are moving to Austin from NYC sometime this year. I'm trying to help him with some info but have been out of the rental market for a decade.

Does anyone know what the current rates are for renting an apt/loft/condo downtown? For example, a 1BR-1BA or 2BR-2BA and typical sq. footage for each. A range would be great, e.g. "1BR-1BA will be 300-900 sf and $650-$1400/month rent," etc. Are rentals fairly available in the downtown area? Any info would be helpful.

Additionally, they are planning to buy a condo or loft in the downtown area once they are settled. Any information, resources or websites on this topic would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

EDIT: Of course, I have also googled this info, but was posting to see if anyone had specific/recent info or recommendations. Thanks.

I lived at Gables west ave. from 6/02 - 6/04 as best I remember our place was a 1100 sq ft 2/2 for about $1350.

I lived at 404 Rio Grande from 6/04 - 6/05. Our 2/2 there was about 1250 sq ft and was about $1460.

The best thing to do is go look at the units avaliable, and see if they are running any specials. The best time to get a deal is Dec. and Jun. b/c a lot of leases end when school is out.
