What should you know before purchasing? Looking to spend between 2500-4000 on a new TV. Anybody done research as to best brands, models, etc. Any help appreciated.

I have a 52" JVC HD-ILA TV and it's awesome (under $3,000)..........................very fine!

Your choices for flat panel displays:

Resolution: High Def or Enhanced Def

Technology: DLP, LCD, Plasma

Decide on a resolution 1st, then sort out the technology. Avsforum is the place to go. I have an HD Panasonic Plasma, which is incredible.

The difference between ED and HD is huge in my opinion.. HD is much better than ED.. that is why the tvs are more expensive..

we just got a LCoS (liquid crystal on Silicone) phillips 55 " tv.. and it is freaking awesome.. this is brand new technology and is supposed to look better than DLP, b/c it doesn't have the screen door effect and you the 2% of the population who can see the color wheel on DLP, don't see it on LCoS.

HD is incredible on that thing!

screen door effect - on non-HD screens at closer viewing distances - some will see the picture as if they were viewing through a screen door because of the larger pixels.

Rainbow effect - only applies to DLP technology. Because of the technology (essentially as spinning color wheel reflected off mirrors, == think of the old time aluminum Christmas trees with color wheel that would cause the tree to change colors), some see a rainbow effect.

I tested out a DLP in my home and never saw the rainbow effect (but my room had too much light for the DLP, which needs a darker room to really shine). I could see the screen door effect on a ED panny plasma, which didn't bother me, but I still went with the HD plasma.

One other thing to consider - the problem with HD is that most channels are not broadcast in HD - they are shown in standard definition.

This is the one advantage of a ED (the mid range) set - those regular non-HD broadcasts look better on an ED set rather than a HD set.

I know - too many choices. It became much harder to buy a television set.

Go to Avsforum and figure it out.

And one other thing - I love the cable card in my panasonic. I don't have to have a cable box - the card, which plugs into my television does that for me. I have still have a cable box though, because I run it to my TIVO so I can watch live TV while recording another live TV show on TIVO.

What the hell is a DVI cable and what is it good for?

They included one in the box when I got my ProView 26" LCD TV last Friday evening cause my 30 year old tv crapped out and I needed something to watch the game on.

The TV has a connector for it but I don't know what it is for.

Can anybody enlighten me?

DVI
Digital Video Interconnect
This is used for an uncompressed digital signal to be sent from the device, DVD player, Cable box, Sat receiver to the TV. It keeps the signal in its digital format from the device to your monitor. When used there is a little less digital noise, less motion problems and a little better color. This is also used for copy right protection by hollywood.
On the whole discussion on LCD, DLP..... Make sure on any of these you look at an analog signal before you make your mind up. The big problem with DLP is watching analog signals as it does not do well. LCD is my choice or the JVC DILA as they both do much better then DLP with fast motion and poor signals.

Thanks to this thread and avsforum, Katy and I broke down and bought a new HDTV. We got a LOT of info off avsforum and then went to the Austin Home Theater Store (or whatever it's called).

There we compared all the technologies and weighed the pros and cons. When we left, we were really leaning toward the Mitsubishi DLP. Just for grins, we went by Best Buy. They had the DLP we were looking at buying right next to a Sony 60XS955. Since the store was SWAMPED, it took me a while, but I finally managed to grab someone and have them put on the same feed. Katy and I immediately decided on the Sony! And the guy we grabbed happened to be the general manager of the store. He personally told me that he'd match any non-sale price, even online.

After going home and researching, I found one online for $2950 (rather than BB's $4000). When we went back to the GM, he finally matched that price, even though it was supposedly $250 below store cost.

I gotta tell y'all, it looks INCREDIBLE. Thanks for the help.

I second Orangeblood's recommendation. I looked at DLP, Plasma and front projectors. Plasma looks great, but the price really goes up for true HD. The Sony Grand Wega has true HD that really looks incredible and they also make it in smaller sizes if you don't have a big space.

Nice tellie OB.

I just bought a 22 inch widescreen HDTV Panasonic LCD for a playroom (needed something on the wall to prevent knockovers and to play Baby Einstein DVD's). The LCD is nice. It is hard to compare it with the plasma because of the size difference - but I am very happy with it.

60 inches must light up the block. Sounds nice.

When it was delivered I thought: "What the hell? This thing is bigger than the one in the store. It's freaking HUGE." Now it's grown on me.

Repeat after me:
"There is no such thing as too big when it comes to TV size."

I have a Pioneer 65" rear projection CRT HD Monitor with my couch about 7 feet from the front of the screen. I know per rule of thumb that it's too close, too big, or whatever - but I don't buy it. It's huge and it looks great. In college we had a 120" front projection theater set up in our living room, and itt was allsome.

We got a 42 inch Sony WEGA, rear projection LCD for under 2000. I love it. May I recommend PM'ing hlaustin if you're shopping, as he works for a store here in Austin and was very helpful when we bought ours. He's correct to, I think the Sony picture with standard definition shows is much better.

I have the 50" LCD Sony- which I got a really good deal on. Great tv when fed an HD signal- and does better than a lot of the other hd tv's w/ a digital non-hd satellite signal.

One of the things I like about the Sony is its built-in HD tuner. I can pull in all the networks/ pbs/ locals in HD using a small antenna behind the tv. I understand the next generation of Samsungs/ JVC's will also have the built-in tuner. Good Luck with your purchase!

As I have said before if anybody on this board is looking for a TV pm me and come see me and I will give you a good deal on any audio/video products. I work at A&B TV and am there every day except mon. and tues, excpet tomorrow going to the ksu game.
Just let me know you are from hornfans.com
Thanks

hlaustin - can you beat that deal and send it to Denver?

I would pay shipping, of course, but I think that would wash the sales tax I wouldn't have to pay.

PM me if you would like. I have a basement media room begging for that sony.
