Layered Voice Analysis - Lie detectors

So basically, a computer program analyzes your voice (either live or from a recording) and determines whether you are lying, probably lying or telling the truth.

I'm envisioning all sorts of ethical problems with law enforcement (and insurance companies, the legal system, Homeland Security, etc.) adopting this technology. Is this foolproof? What recourse is there if the software is wrong? Who audits the computer system (ie. can it be rigged)?

I agree, but my concern is on how law enforcement and people with guns will use it. It could easily be manipulated to persecute people.

This is likely ********. Even polygraphs with all the biometrics are not that accurate. At best, it's an interrogation technique that could be useful IF the person being interrogated believes that it works.

Don't they take a baseline before that actually test you? I would think that they'd have to calibrate the machine to you specifically before measuring anything.

If so, the key to cheating one of these things it to make your baseline readings out of whack. i.e. Pretend your lying when they ask what your full name was.

Wow.

I am less worried about the possible investigative abuses that could ensue than I am about every day uses.

Telemarketers using it so find the best ways to take the conversation, colleagues at work using it for professional or unprofessional reasons, CNN using it for debates or interviews, or being used in job interviews.

If this software becomes cheap, they could put it in every cell phone so that the phone they flash when someone lies.

This could get out of hand. I'm glad I am married and no longer dating.

lol... I hadn't thought of that. We could be very close to seeing a real ******** detector. It could change the face of politics if TV sets had one built in....

As far as law enforcement, I can almost guarantee that it would never be admissible in court as evidence.

lie detector test do not work. many, many studies have been done to show that if you truely believe the lie, you will pass. Pathological liars will pass with flying colors.

Battleship - nice work.

Fast forward...

Supervisor: HR has reported that you failed the periodic random lying screen.

You: What the hell are you talking about?

Supervisor: As it turns out, the screens are run the first Monday a.m. of each month. Here's the report from EAP.

You: So, saying that aggy might give us trouble next week is deemed a lie?

Supervisor: That's what the machine says. We've had good reliability with these devices, and I have the latest calibration right here.

You: Latest calibration? You don't mean...

Supervisor: This is your second policy 462B violation. Federal law requires us to undertake best efforts to have a lie free workplace in order to keep our Federal contracts. This second violation is subject to discipline up to and including termination. As in all prior cases like this, in this one, the determination is for termination.

NBMisha or worse yet:

Supervisor: It has come to our attention that you have been lying to your co-workers.

You: What the hell are you talking about?

Supervisor: You said you got lucky this weekend, and our test show you have been telling that same lie for over 8 months.

You: but...

Supervisor: You will not be fired, just laughed at by the whole company. Have a nice day.

Let me just tell you, this product is one of the most comically bad pieces-of-sh$t I have ever had the displeasure of actually laying my hands on: Handy Truster. It told me I was lying when I stated my name.
