Lawn treatment services

My lawn is the worst in the neighborhood. We bought our house a year and a half ago. For some reason, the previous own split grass type down the middle (separated by the walkway). I know half is St. Augustine. I believe the other half is zoysia (sp?).

Now, the zoysia side looks like a desert while the St. Augustine is hanging in there and looks no worse than the other St. Augustine lawns in the neighborhood.

I’ve seen the TruGeen vans roaming around the neighborhood, so it’s got me thinking.

Are those services worth it? I don’t have a very big lawn. We don’t have a backyard, so I’m only need to do something for the front of the house.

Would just laying down some fertilizer do the trick? I’ve got some weeding to do, but that won’t be too difficult.

I know that the grass is still “dead”, and will get going soon, but I’m completely ignorant when it comes to this stuff.

Thoughts?

It hasn't been watered all winter (other than the rain we've had in Central Texas). it's under shade almost all day (big oak trees in my front lawn).

Calling it a desert may be extreme, but it looks pretty bad.

I use Trugreen in El Paso. They come six times a year at $60/pop and do a pretty good job. They've definitely improved my yard over the past two years. I'm too lazy to fertilize myself, so the money they charge is worth it to me.
