Lawn Mower Suggestions

I'm sick of my LawnBoy. I've had it for about 7 years and it seems every year a problem crops up that needs repair.

Noticed in the Home Depot ad yesterday they've got a Honda 21" 3-speed mower for $429, a Toro 22" 3-speed for $279 and a Yard Machines 21" 2-speed for $169.

Anyone has these models or similar ones? Been reliable and have stayed out of the shop?

I can't speak to those models, but I just got a 21" Craftsman with a Briggs & Stratton engine from Sears for $210. No complaints so far.

I've got a CubCadet and it does its job admirably. Its small, but my yard isn't big so it works fine.

If I had a bigger yard, I'd buy a Honda, no question about it.

I've got the Torro and it works great so far. There are some other threads on here about this and Torro was well recommended and not as pricey as the Honda.

DieUCLA, I guess I should have gone with CUBcaddet instead huh?

Honda or John Deere tend to be the best mowers. Honda engines can't be beat for reliability, ease of starting, etc.

Buy the cheapest one you can find. If it breaks after three years of use; consider it a win, and replace.

Not very pro-enviroment, but..

I got a Toro from HD. It's been pretty good. No problems, other than being hard to start when you haven't used it in a while. I think all mowers have that problem though.

Buy a craftsman from Sears. They're great. Cheap too. I've had one for 7 years now and never repaired anything. I take care of it though.

I went Troy-Bilt from Lowes a couple years ago. Got one with oversized rear wheels and not self-propelled. Oversized wheels make it easy to push and yards not big enough to need self-propel. Plus if you have to navigate around trees, etc it's easy. Love the mower - typical Briggs/stratton motor, fires up first pull every time.

I've had lawn boy, snapper, etc. This one stacks up. The thing I liked best about the snapper was the bag - easiest to empty.

I love my Troy Built though the Lawn boy I had before lasted more than 30 years....

Love the one pull start with hardly any pressure, figure even if was an old geezer I could pull start that sucker. Briggs and stratton engine, self-propelled, just over $300, variable front wheel drive with the larger back wheels

I have a Sears Craftsman push mower with 6.5HP and 21" deck. Mulcher or rear bagger (only bagged 2 times).

Bought it for $115 used from an old retired Aggie in Round Rock who buys mowers and fixes them back up.

Has worked great.

I have a generic brand 22" cut with a 6.5hp Briggs and Stratton that I got at Sams for $200 7 years ago. It mulches or bags. I usually mulch. It still runs great. I agree with the comment from a previous poster, unless you are a landscaper who uses it all the time there is no need to sink a ton of money into a mower.

I have owned both a Honda and a Craftsman. For ease of starting and overall good job, the Honda wins hands down. I have had the Honda for 5 seasons now with absolutely no maintenance beyond filling it with gas and oil. The craftsman required a tune up each year to keep it starting on the first pull. I would go with the Honda, especially if you can find a used one and then there is not a wide gulf in price between the two. If cost is important, then go with the craftsman and keep it tuned. My 2 cents.....
