Lawn care: Thatch removal

Anyone know of a place in Austin that rents the machine you use do do this? As I recall, it cores the soil or something....

Are you talking about aerating (sp?) the yard or dethatching?

Two different things, dethatching is breaking up dead grass and stuff in the yard, and is usually an attachment to your mower blade that looks like two (or more) spring-loaded heavy wires and are attached to the blade. I think you can buy these at any garden or home improvement place.

An aerater (sp?) is usually a heavy roller that has hollow stakes on it. You roll it around your yard and it pulls up plugs of dirt. It loosens the soil and allows air to get to the roots of your grass. Most rental places have them

We just moved, and the previous owners were very occasional mowers (once every 3 weeks I would guess), and they always just side-discharged the grass all over the yard. It's just sparse grass and dead grass...mostly bermuda where it's decent, but mostly clover and other weeds in the front. I'm just trying to help it out -- it needs all the help it can get!

Apparently (because Neil Sperry says so) "thatch" is different from dead clippings. There is not supposed to be anything wrong with leaving clippings on a lawn. Also, there is not supposed to be anything wrong with leaving thatch on a lawn. FWIW, he says not to core the soil either unless it has been driven on or is unusually compacted for some other reason.

Top dress it with some good compost, and overseed it with more bermuda.
Cheap and effective, if you keep it watered.

Well too much thatch will thin the grass out and promote disease, but it isnt usually a problem. I agree topcoating/watering would be a good choice instead of anything major if its bermuda. Start with the preemergents in early fall to keep out the winter weeds.

Some thatch is good for a lawn. You could just bag it from now on and the thatch will likely diminish.
