whale butt he didn't commit or anything. we've known all along that ou is riding pretty high in this deal. the troubling thing, i think, is the suddenness of the visit together with it being the whole family. that makes it look pretty serious.
well, sure, but maybe it just means he and his family are pushing the process. maybe they would like to reach a decision . . . uh . . . sooner . . . uh . . . rather than later. if we get a hurry-up visit, too, then i'm not any more worried than i had been. if we don't hear anything about a visit and they are flying all over the place, then, yes, i will be very worried.
call me ishmael, but i think he looks good in burnt orange.
We should recruit any 5 star guy in the midwest.
We play a lot of big 12 games all over the midwest, so its our territory, not just lumped into the out of state category.
Say you offered 10 OSS knowing that if you get 1 (maybe 2) you will be lucky. That leaves 8/9 for instate, but ou, aggy and LSU will lock those 8/9 up so you lose out there. On the other hand if you offer more than you have and everyone signs, you have to either hope for a medical or make some kid's life so miserable he leaves the program.
A ***** of a situation either way. The only good from this for Texas is Mack is obviously letting the new coaches set up their own OSS recruiting strategy. In past years this would have all gone through Mack who had a tendency to squash it as the returns have not exceeded the effort yet.
I've been arguing that Mack has missed the boat for years with his in-state only myopia.
Let's say we have 22 scholies to offer each year (on average). You first offer the top 20 guys in-state and probably get 16 .
Then you offer the top 15 guys out of state (based on talent, need and likelyhood will be interested). You let all but the 2 you will wait till signing day for, know that it is first come first signed. No one has any reason to be upset and we probably have more all-stars on the team.
With this approach , and more honest recruiting effort than has been the case in some of the last years, we would have 5 to 9 OOS starters on the team in 5 years! (that means 5 to 9 better players than we would have had!)
Mike, I would agree with you if there was evidence that the out-of-stater's were so much superior to the Texas kids that the risk of turning over a more known quantity to ou, aggy and LSU was worth it. (aggy's only hope is for a sustainable upgrade over the lower talent they have been getting. IMHO, LSU is the one that would stand to gain the most with ou right behind.)
As I said above, at least now Mack appears to be more open to out-of-state recruits. Unfortunately, outside of Brewer no luck so far, and the cost has been no QB's for the 2012 class.
The grass might be greener on the other side - but that might be the result of a swamp.
I am suggesting that we recruit 2 to 4 top 50 /100 national guys to replace the last 4 guys in our class from Texas. They would be Hicks kind of guys as opposed to the guys who transfer after 2 years because they don't get playing time.
We would NOT be losing anyone of consequence to OU or LSU and would gain two or three All-Americans!
NOW, this approach requires fore though. The coaches have to target the potential recruits when they are soph or younger and honestly work. Probably harder than the group did last year.
Mike, I said Brewer was the exception. Your theory is ok and would work if top out of state recruits cooperate. So far it hasn't, but let's give the new coaches a chance to be successful on the field before worrying about recruiting.
Brewer is a 'special' case, or an exception in that he has a sister that's a freshman with the swimming program and he's been to Austin a lot... you can't compare him and Sendlein, Studdard or Brewster to other OOS recruits. I could be wrong here, but if you recruit 20-25 OOS kids, then you could possibly expect 15-25% of those to come to Texas... but the key is getting them in the door for a Junior Day, a June Clinic or an Unofficial/Official visit. That's half the battle...
If you recruit only these Top100 type players, I'd doubt you do better than 10% hit rate. Their in-state schools are always a big mountain to climb before you can battle every big time program i the country. It seems Nick Saban offers most every Top 150 player and will end up with about 10 OOS studs. Not so sure I like this approach. Find the 15-20 studly OOS players that show real interest and aren't grade or character risks. There may not even be that many that make the cut. Then go all out for them. Maybe you get 2-3 most every year but they're all keepers. Put those with 18-20 in-state jewels and Top5 class most every year. May be just what happens this yr
I only want/expect to get 2 to 4 top OOS per year. Over 4/5 years that's 5 to 8 starters. That's 4 to 7 more than we usually have. If they start they are usually better than who we have been recruiting.
I know it's harder to do than to take the second level guy from Austin or Flugerville, but it's worth the work.
Our coaches simply have not tried very had in the past.
5 star guys simply don't grow on trees, not even in Texas.
You can't afford to overlook opportunities that you have a legitimate stake in.
Now if the kid has no interest or has a "handler" or is otherwise a red flag, maybe that mitigates. But that goes for in state as well (such as Seastrunk).
Woulda been better if we coulda showed him some hot-**** passing in that springer... ol' Holgorsen put up something like eleven or twelve TDs in WVU's, I think.
