Last night was just UGLY

It is difficult to think of ANY component of the game that was pretty to watch other than the fact we had more points than did Ole Miss when the clock read zeroes at the end...

When will the sloppiness end? What was it, 21 turnovers when all was said and done. And that was just the Texas total. Miss was close in number.

Why are we getting beat on the boards? With the size of AG and Cokie, we OUGHT to be winning those battles. Half-hearted efforts in the paint are NOT going to get the job done once conference play rolls around. I like the potential I see in Cokie, but someone needs to also remind her not to be backing so far under the basket on a shot that she is out of position for a rebound.

And jeebus...SLOW THE TEMPO down when we have a multiple possession lead with barely a minute to go. Make the other team put you on the line. Of course, that DOES require being able to MAKE the free throws...there were not many of those for Texas last night and I think half of them were in the last three minutes of the game.

Oh...and there are times where certain players need to realize that an awkward shot made while out of control is NOT the best option...kick the ball out and either let someone shoot the trey or at least reset the offense. There needs to be a cohesive team effort on the floor and there were too many times last night that such an effort simply DID NOT EXIST!

Didn't they get to the line three times in the final three minutes? woulda been more except Ole Miss had to foul to get into the penalty.

We are not a dominant rebounding team. Don't know why that's hard to figure out. We are an excellent defensive team most of the time. We struggle to hit shots which does leave me scratching my head with all the good shooters we have-at least I think of our team that way.

Emjoy the wins which should be plentiful before Big 12 play and then we will see how the team plays in conference.

Lord, yes, UGLY doesn't even begin to describe it...

Apparently, "Boot Camp" did not take for some??

I sure hope we can play better by the time Big 12 comes, or the UGLY W will be turned in to an UGLY L.

However, I would like to say a big "yee hah" to Yvonne for the two 3's, to Kris Nash for the hustle and putbacks..

The two Nashes on the floor = good things...

Also, why is B-Rave NOT getting the ball more??

She is FAST, and creates shots....

I know we want to get the ball inside, but Cokie and AG were just not on the beam......I hope Cokie can learn to take that turn to the basket w/o the foot shuffle!!

Hats off to Carol, our intrepid color analyst on the radio for her very "right on" comments, and her loyalty to UT, despite being the ex- 'Ol Miss Coach!!

We need ballers who can create and make their own shots! Pure and simple. We have no one on the team who can create their own shots and make them. B-Rav can but she gets out of control more often than not like someone else mentioned. She's a senior now and should have much better body control and BB smarts than to put up those ill advised shots and this is coming from B-Rav's #1 fan - ME! LOL!!

Coach please recruit some "BALLERS!" I'm even more prone to stick Kristen in and take out Earnie. Kristine will crash the boards and shoot. I don't know what Earnie does, o yeah defense however we need POINTS!!

And what's up with Gayle missing all of those chippies right under the basket?

She was like 2 for 10 or something like that. I much prefer Reed in there. I would drill Reed and Gayle every day for hours at a time on post moves under the basket. I say they must make 100 post move shots every day. REPETITION is the key to learning.

What we see now is how they'll play for the season. I don't believe there will be a great improvement when conference play starts. We'll win more than we lose but it will be about the same as last year. Until we get some ballers with "ice" in their veins we're in for a long season.

I agree on the ugliness of it, but I think this is increasingly the identity of the team - they like to play fast and helter-skelter. They just need to get better at it- i.e. finish, too many fast breaks ending in a missed lay-up or turnover. Too often Gayle or Reed makes an excellent block or rebound and then has to make a wild pass because everyone else is off to the races and there is no-one to bring the ball up. Almost comic at times. Nevertheless, the glass is also half full. There is more fight in this team than in recent years. They were clutch at the charity stripe at the end, and they ramped up their intensity when they needed to most - at the end of each half. Also when Erika has the ball when we desperately need a basket, my heart no longer sinks. This team knows how to win a close one. Ole Miss played Ohio Sate close and gave us fits. Texas is not an elite team this season, but I think we can be a good one. I am hoping for a 9-7 conference record, a few wins in the Big 12 tournament, and second round loss in the NCAA's ( If we get very lucky, a sweet 16 finish is not out of the question). Any worse than this ( which is entirely possible - as inconsistency is the only consistent attribute of the team so far), and I will be disappointed. And whenever I get nostalgia for the Jody Conradt days, I remember that TX did not even make the tournament in her last two years, and those teams were not without talent either. I think I might start taking a valium before each game.

I can't argue with "ugly" because it was. Give Miss. some credit. They will knock someone off in SEC play. What I thought was missing was consistency. We had great 5-7 minutes of play, end of first half and the end of the game, and then nothing. The switching on defense and overall defensive intensity were pretty good. I liked Yvonne Anderson's play. By the end of the game I actually felt that this team has the potential to do some good things.

Winning is nice, but I mostly go to games hoping to see good basketball. If I want to see sloppy play I can go to my neighborhood middle school.

Pretty or ugly doesn't matter much to me. Obviously better quality of play adds to the game. But, what I care about most is effort. I want to see the competition. I want to see two teams give everything they have. I felt like I got that Wednesday.

Yes the game was ugly. But, I don't see that as a reason to bash this team. Sometimes it happens. I'm not at my best absolutely every day that I go to work.

And, I think we should take an objective look at what really happened......

We had a point guard who had her first really bad game since she came to Texas. (At least that I remember) We had another point guard get two quick fouls and have to sit down early. Our third point guard is a freshman, and played like a freshman. Erika even played point for a while.

The refs certainly contributed to the ugliness. That was one of the most inconsistently called games I have ever seen. I don't think anyone on the floor had any idea what they could, or could not do at any given point in time. I was afraid someone would get hurt in the last minute while Mississippi figured out what they would have to do in order to be called for a foul.

The other problem was inconsistent play in the post. But, I actually thought I saw progress. I thought Ashley was more aggressive going to the basket. I thought Cokie was a little more under control. Both still have a lot of progress to make in those areas. But, as long as I see progress I don't feel like I can say they are as good as they are going to get.

Mississippi is not a bad basketball team, and we won. We played outstanding defense. We didn't let the refs or shooting problems become a distraction from the two things that can be controlled - effort and defense. We won a game in which we struggled with point guard play and making shots in the post......It takes a tremendous effort to overcome one of those in most games.

Ashley, Ashleigh, Yvonne, Lauren, and Cokie, half the team, are all freshmen and sophomores making significant contributions. They will continue to improve. It will be amazing how much prettier games will be with a little better play at the point and when a post gets a shot or two to fall.

So, sure I saw the ugly. But, I also saw a team that was able to maintain their focus and effort for 40 minutes anyway. I like the effort, and like it even more when it gets us a win.

I think we will see this problem, until we have a player in place that can truly play point guard. We have a good team! But that point guard position can make or break your team. AT is a 2 guard.
