If you've had reconstructive eye surgery (Lasik or similar), please answer the following:

1. What was your eyesight problem, and what procedure did you have done?
2. Who did it (and where)?
3. How long has it been since you had it done?
4. What is your current vision?
5. On a scale of 1-10, how satisfied are you with the results?

I think I want to get Lasik, but am concerned with the long-term results and possible negative effects/risks. Any insight would be appreciated!

1 nearsidedness, 20/400, couldn't read the E at the top of the chart without glasses
2 Mitchel Wong at Austin Eye Clinic
3 9 years
4 20/10 and 20/20
5 11, greatest thing I ever did. I had glasses from 3rd grade on.

1. 20/godawful, plus astigmatism, my glasses were +9.5.
2. Dr. Goodman, San Francisco
3. 10 years ago.
4. 20/25, still no reading glasses @ 40 years old, 20/25 same as 3 mos post surgery.
5. 9.5. Floaters you get used to, halos are a pain for driving, but on balance one of the best things I ever did.

you should also clarify whether the excimer laser was VISX, B&L or LADARVision and whether the flap was created with a mechanical microkeratome or a femtosecond laser.

1. I had 20/400 and 20/450 vision with bad astigmatim (in the -5 range), I had PRK done because my corneas were too thin to have Lasik.
2. Col Robert Smith in Plano. He’s a PRK pro that did surgery for Air Force pilots.
3. I had it done about 2 months ago
4. My vision is now 20/15 in both eyes.
5. Easily now a 10. I have halo’s or starbursts that some people complain about.

I read lots of good things about PRK before having it done. I just didn’t realize how long it took to recover. There was no WOW factor that you have with Lasik. It took me about 4 days to go back to work and 10 days to be able to drive. If you have to have PRK done PM me and I’ll give you the skinny.

1. Don't recall
2. Berkeley in Houston
3. 3-4 years. Had to have the right eye LASIK'ed again. Free of charge. Check to make sure your surgeon offers that.
4. It was 20/15 after the surgery. Not sure what it is today.
5. Difficult to say since I'm almost forgotten what it is like to have to wear contacts. Worried at the lake or pool that I would lose my contacts.

This is for those who have had the surgery. Im going to Austin Eye Clinic and getting the Itra Lasik consultation and setting my appointment for the actual surgery. Its 4000$ for the IntraLasik and 5000$ for the Custom Refractive Blaa blaa blaa Intra Lasik. Who here did which and why?

Also mainly i want to know about Dry eyes and Night vision issues. These are questions im going to also ask the doc. about but wanted yalls first hand experience with. Yall arent making any money off this so you're going to give it to me straight up
Thanks

excellent thread! LASIK is one of my 2008 resolutions.

Can someone elaborate on the halos, spots, floaters, etc...

Are they constant? do they come and go? do they affect your safety (while driving?)?

Well I ended up doing it (after much convincing from this thread). I did the $4000 Intralase (not sure what the other one is). I did it October 20. I never experienced halos or other night vision problems, and now I rarely experience dry eye (use drops as needed which is about twice a week for me.) I went to Dr. Whitsett in Houston and do not have enough good things to say about them. I have not regretted doing it for even a split second. Oh and if you pay cash you get $200 off. PM me if you have any other questions!

1. I wore contacts and was -9 in one eye and -8.5 in the other. Very bad eyesight. I had LASIK.
2. Dr. Holliday in Houston on Chimney Rock.
3. 6 1/2
4. 20/20
5. 8

custom lasik takes care of the spots and glowing lights at night after a few months. your eyes are pretty crazy for a month or so bc they are trying to adjust and one day, no more problems ever again.

Also planning to get Lasik in 2008. Any DFW posters willing to share their experiences - doctors, procedures, costs, etc.

Much appreciated!

Once my contact supply runs out I am getting this done. $3600 total for pre, surgery, and post from Dr. Baza in Houston. He's been my eye doctor since I was about 11 and the only guy I trust with my eyes. After wearing contacts and glasses for 14 years, I cannot wait to wake up in the morning with clear vision.

I also did a cost analysis and it comes out cheaper doing lasik now than continuing with contacts and glasses for the next 15 years. But that might just be me because the glasses I have now are Versace.

With much respect, stockjock, you got your surgery 6&1/2 years ago. My doc told me that this surgery has improved tremendously in the last 3 years. The time you had it might have contributed to you giving your experience an 8.

1. nearsightedness, 20/400000000000000000, if Willie Nelson was standing 3 feet away from me and I didn't have glasses on then he would look like a really hot chick, that's how blind I was. I had Radial Keratotomy.

2. Doyle Leslie, Austin, outpatient surgery.

3. I had it done 1980/81 I don't remember excatly, but I was one of the first and had to go back for follow up vivits every two weeks for 4 months and every month after that for a year. Right eye was done first, then left, then right eye again because the first surgery didn't do enough correction. I worked for the state and they sent out a memo in May saying that for the new fiscal year starting in Sept. they would not cover RK anymore and I called Dr Leslie that day,. I asked his receptionist how long it would take to complete the surgery and she said "you're a state employee, right?" She had had like 5000 calls asking the same thing. The day I had my surgery on the first eye, Dr Leslie did 13 RK procedures other than my own.

4. 20/15 the last time I had it checked.

5. a billion, I now have to wear reading glasses and I have some starburst effect at night still, but my brain edits it out now and it's not a problem. I bothered me a little at first but not that much. As one of my co workers at the time said after he had his (which was before me) "it's nice to be able to see the bouncing boobies during sex without having to wear glasses."

The hardest part was the week of healing post op. I love to read and it practally killed me. I understand that LASIK is not that bad, in fact there is a do it yourself LASIK kit out on the market.

I just wanted to bring this thread to the top to see if I can get any more people that have actually had it done. What about the night halos and dry eyes. I saw one person said it wasent a big deal i just wanted to hear from a few of the others that had done it.
thanks

I had PRK instead of Lasik. My doctor said there is less chance for complications with PRK both during and after surgery since you don't have that flap cut. The machine that cuts could malfunction, or there could be problems with putting the flap back and it healing, etc. He said especially for active people he recommends PRK.

The downside to PRK is recovery time and it was a bit more painful than I thought it would be (but you get vicodin for that so it's not so bad once you take a dose). The pain came a day after the procedure but during and right after there was zero pain. I was able to drive on the fourth day after the procedure and have zero complications. It's very cool to not have to deal with contacts or glasses.

My eyes were already dry and they are even worse 8 years after having lasik. Vision is OK, but I'm not able to read the newspaper as of about 3 weeks ago unless I hold it away from me. I was told that would eventually be the case.

My biggest disappointment about lasik was that I was never able to see through women's clothes.

I think they all use laser. With lasik they cut a flap in your eye peel it back, laser you and then put the flap back. With PRK they scratch off some of the top layer and then do the laser. You have to wear a clear contact for a few days (mine was 4 days) after PRK until the eye heals.

1. I was 20/200 in both eyes.
2. I went to Kleiman/Evangelista in Arlington (Dr. Evangelista performed the surgery) and had Custom Intralasik.
3. Been right at a month.
4. 20/20
5. 10

The starburst at night were the worst part. I still have them a little bit but they seem to be getting better. My eyes havent been as dry as I had figured. Some days are worse than others. Just get some good lubricating drops and you'll be fine. Systane works great.
