Las Vegas shows

Going to Vegas in early August with 2 guys and 2 girls. Regarding the shows, which ones are recommended? Since none of us have ever been, we want to try one of the Cirque shows at the very least. It seems there are 4 to choose from, but some of them are upwards of 100 bucks a person. For that reason we were leaning towards Mystere, but we don't know if it is good or not. It seems to be the longest running show they offer, so I'm guessing it would be a good taste of what the others are like. I think we need to get tix in advance for this type of thing, correct?

Also, we'd possibly like to try a "classic" Vegas showgirls type show, but know absolutely nothing about them. Which ones are good to see? What should we expect other than a bunch of women just strutting around on stage? How much should we expect to pay?

Thanks for the help.

LOVE by Cirque is fantastic
Blue Man Group is awesome
Penn and Teller is pretty entertaining and not just a traditional magic show

I would personally avoid any of the Broadway adaptations as they are all abbreviated 90-minute versions of the full show but perhaps that appeals to some people.

I think the only traditional showgirl show left is at Bally's but I can't remember what it's called.

I posted this in another thread, but it's appropriate advice here too:

I was there with the wife two weeks ago and we saw Love. If you're a Beatles fan (or even if you're not), it's an amazing show. Each seat has speakers built into the headrest and there are speakers on the back of the seat in front of you. I need to find chairs like that for my house! If you get tickets to it, I would suggest getting tickets away from the stage. 3 reasons:
1) A lot of action takes place above the stage and if you're sitting down low, you'll be craning your neck a lot.
2) There is so much happening on the stage at one time, it would be very hard to take in if you were sitting close to the stage. It would be like sitting in the front row at a movie theater.
3) Tickets up high are much cheaper.

Po that ain't nothing. Carrot Top is gonna be rocking the house when I am there.

Mystere is definitely worth it. Indeed the newer Cirque shows may be more elaborate, "modern", edgy (?), but if price/quaity is something to be considered, "yeah", Mystere is worth it.

All the Vegas Cirque shows are random circus acts, except for Ka (MGM)....which has a quest plot.

Blue Man Group (Venetian) is great, but avoid the poncho rows.

Phantom of the Opera (Venetian) is an excellent elaborate production.

Follies (Tropicana) and Jubilee (Bally's) are old school Vegas revues.

Maybe I'm just an old fart and don't get it, but the missus and I forked over some big bucks to see "O" at the Bellagio after hearing everyone rave about it. B-O-R-I-N-G. We actually walked out about 25 minutes into it.

Rollingwood,
Do you recommend Blue Man Group or Penn and Teller if I'm going to only see one show? (I've been to a few Cirque shows). I'm a girl going with my boyfriend and we're 25.

I have been to Ka and it was one of the most amazing things I had ever seen. Very visually stunning.

Penn and Tel are really good and the poster above is right in that it is very entertaining.

We head to O at the end of this month and I am really looking forward to it.

i really looked forward to seeing the Blue Man Group, but didn't think it lived up to the billing. maybe i had too high expectations?

the music was great. i wish there had been more of that.

they came up to us before the show and asked if we wanted to participate in a gag. they wanted us to come in late and then the guys on stage make a big deal out of it and put a spotlight on us.

i could not say "hell no" quick enough.

We went to see "Love" 2 weeks ago also and it was totally, totally awesome. We actually got to sit on 3rd row and loved being that close to everything. The music was awesome - it's the Beatles songs - not somebody else singing their songs, uh, they're just not there in person.

One tip if you buy souvenirs - DON"T buy the DVD - it consists of the soundtrack with a picture of the show logo on the screen. The separate CD soundtrack is awesome. Sorry to get off on this.

Carrot Top - went to see him couple of years ago and we laughed from the minute we went in until we left. Very funny.

OTOH, Penn and Teller was a dud. I really thought I would like them but found their show not funny - but others here liked it so maybe I just wasn't in the mood for them that night.

As I've said on other LV Entertainment threads, for the money the Comedy Stop at the Tropicana is a great deal. $19.95 and you get 3 stand-up comedians. Good entertainment and great value.

"O" 10
La Reve 9.9
Mystere, Ka 9.8
Blue Man Group 9.7
Jubilee 9.3
Danny Gans 9.2
Elton John 9.1
Zumanity worthless

If you like the classic Vegas show, Jubilee is it, and well done. It's just not in the modern theatre, etc. But the dancing, the sets, etc., are very good.

Elton sings well, and plays the songs you would like, but the presentation is downright goofy.

Zumanity is not what you would hope--a Cirque version of a Vegas girl show except done with beautiful topless athletes in a sexy format. Instead it is a lot of crass humor, very little Cirque quality, homosexual line bending and jokes based on pulling dildos out of their pockets.

As a previous poster said I was sorta blahed by P&T. I was (am) a huge fan of their stuff, and was so excited to see the show, only to feel it was just OK. I can't remember now why I didn't like it so much, but it's always bothered me since I generally like their stuff. I've thought about seeing them again without the fanboy expectations to see if I just overhyped it to myself, but haven't yet.

Blue Man Group I didn't know anything about going in, but was very entertained. I saw it a few years ago when it was somewhere else (Luxor?), but from the recent reviews I've read it sounds as though the show is about the same. Very entertaining, but very very different.

I'd also like to reiterate that Carrot Top is one of the best shows in Vegas. His show is VERY funny. I've seen it twice, once with my parents, and once with 3 friends. None of the above people wanted to see the show beforehand, but all agreed afterwards that it was well worth it. The jokes are non-stop, so if you don't like one, he's quickly onto the next one. Every time I take someone new to Vegas and they want to see a show I try and convince them to see CT. It is a little weird seeing him all roided up though...

Recently I've seen two Cirque shows, Mystere and Le Reve (it's technically a cirque-esque show since it wasn't actually created by CDS), and they were both pretty cool. I wouldn't see one every trip, and I'm not sying to see every one on the strip, but it's fun to see one with my wife every few trips. Don't expect them to make any sense, just expect to see a bunch of cool feats of strenght and acrobatics.
