Laptop Screen Dimming While On Battery

There is a big difference between the brightness of my screen while "plugged in" and while on batteries. I understand the reason for the dimming is to conserve power - I don't care. I want my screen to be brighter regardless of conservation - how do I change the settings to make it brighter while on batteries? Thanks.

Generally, go to
Start
Settings
Control Panel

Under Power Options or Power Saver you should have the ability to maximize the screen brightness depending on the "mode" the computer is in, i.e., long-life, max power, etc. On the specific Toshiba I'm looking at, it is under Toshiba Power Saver, and I can look at the details for the battery mode and modify these settings under "Power Save Mode."

I think on some computers under Start->Settings-->Control Panel-->Display, there are some power saving selections as well that could impact the brightness.

There might a hole in the power cord, so when it is plugged in and on, the computer is not getting as much power as it should. I had a friend with an old Dell, and it was dimmer while plugged in, than while running on battery life. He got a new power cord on ebay for like 5 bucks though, and it fixed everything.

HP. If in the BIOS, you guys are still speaking a foreign language. How would I change it in the BIOS? Need lots of hand holding here. Thanks for the replies.

i have a compaq. mine does it as well but i have some keys that i can press to brighten the screen. have you tried that? it decreases battery life but that normally isn't a problem for me b/c normally it is just me walking around the house with it.
