Laptop going to standby

Need a little computer help...

I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 with Millinium Edition. I have a problem with it going to standby and not being able to get it to come back on. I jiggle the mouse, hit the space bar, hit the touch pads, and nothing can "wake it up" even though it's still on and i can hear it running.

There isn't really a length of time that it goes to standby either...sometimes I can be gone half an hour and it will go to standby, and other times I can be gone the whole day and come back and it has not gone to standby.

So I guess I have two questions:
1. Is there a certain way to wake the computer when it goes to standby that I may not be doing?

2. If there isn't, is there a way to make it stop going to standby? (I've looked at the display menu and didn't see anything that pertained to it)

As of now, whenever the computer has gone to standby, I've had to just turn it off, then turn it back on and go through all the scan-disk ****...it is really a hassle and waste of my time.

Thanks for the help...

You are using what is arguably the worst operating system ever released. If you have an opportunity to migrate to Windows 2000 or XP, do so. That's a lot of trouble for solving your problem, but it's the best advice I can provide.

If changing your OS isn't in the foreseeable future, I'd consider disabling hibernation altogether. In fact, even if you do change to a more stable OS, you may want to avoid hibernation. You can let your monitor turn off after a period of time, but set everything else to stay on. To save power and lifecycles on your laptop, shut down when you aren't going to be using it for several hours.

Hibernation is a wonderful idea, but I have rarely seen it operate as intended without at least some issues.

what idig said.

WinME is the worst. If you can get to XP or 2000, go back to Win98 as they are all better then WinME.

I had an old IBM thinkpad that was acting the same way. I went to their website and found a BIOS update that cleared the problem right up.

Caution: be extremely careful and follow all the instruction when updating the BIOS. Also don't update the BIOS unless you know that the update fixed a problem that you are having.

I have an IBM Thinkpad where I have to press the function key ('Fn' in my case) to resume from standby. It's the only thing that has worked in all three OSes I have used on it.
